Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Reporting to the Political Counsellor, you will contribute to the advancement of New Zealand’s political and security goals by supporting the Political Team’s engagement with US Administration officials, congressional staff and non-governmental actors.
This multifaceted role will require you to:
- Support the planning and delivery of visits and events
- Conduct research and analysis
- Build networks of contacts across Washington D.C.
- Advocate for New Zealand's interests with the US and others
- Prepare, brief and draft formal reports

We would like to hear from you if you have:
- A keen interest in both New Zealand and US politics
- An appropriate New Zealand Security Clearance.
- Experience in developing policy advice, advocacy and influencing
- A high standard tertiary qualification preferably in Political Studies, International Relations or similar
- Outstanding communication skills – both written and verbal
Ideally you will also have a good understanding of tikanga (Māori customs and protocols), with the ability to weave te ao Māori (the Māori worldview) into your work.
If you are just starting on this journey that’s OK too – as long as you have a willingness to learn and a desire to develop your cultural capability. As a Te Tiriti o Waitangi partner, this is important to us and we offer training and support.
Please Note: To be considered for this role, you must have the right to work in the United States. The New Zealand Embassy is able to support an application for an A2 visa, which is subject to a 5 year limit. This is a locally employed position, with terms and conditions being set in accordance with US employment regulations. No off-shore allowance or transfer allowance applies.
If the successful candidate has worked or lived in New Zealand and are subsequently employed as locally engaged staff in a NZ Government Embassy or High Commission, they may, subject to individual circumstances, have NZ Tax Residency obligations. We advise any applicant, who may be in this situation, to discuss their tax residency status with the NZ Inland Revenue (IRD) and determine any potential personal tax obligations to IRD.
