Key Responsibilities
Every day, United’s technology powers hundreds of thousands of customer itineraries, operational transactions, weather-related changes and more, many of which would not be possible without a modernization and successful Cloud transformation strategy. The Managing Director – Cloud, Platform Architecture & Engineering has overall responsibility for developing engineering of all Cloud initiatives including Cloud shared platforms, DEVSECOPS, architecture, engineering, and implementation This role will be responsible to lead a team of 150 (additional 70 contractors) and manage approximately a $70 million operating budget and $50-$60 million in capital investment.

• Produce target-state solution architecture and perform assessments as well as gaps analysis.
• Ensure that technology systems are secure, reliable, and scalable, and meet regulatory and compliance requirements. Monitor and assess new and emerging technologies and make recommendations for adoption where appropriate.
• This position is hybrid and can be based in either Chicago or Houston with up to 20% travel required.
• Implement large-scale, innovative IT solutions to drive business transformation.
• Drives business transformation through the application of technology and automation. Drives continuous improvement using Six Sigma and/or other continuous improvement methods to streamline processes and improve consistency, performance and responsiveness of the department.
• Manages budgets for department/projects, including forecasting needs, tracking costs, investigating variances, making corrections, etc.
• Assist in formulating the overall solution strategies and roadmaps. As well as help establish one of more Center of Excellence.
• Manages and develops the Architecture team that is responsible and accountable for strategic technical direction and architecture integrity. Sets standards for Enterprise and System architecture and instigate and foster an Innovative culture in the technology organization, including United’s innovation initiatives and patent strategy.
• Partners and collaborates across enterprise. Partners with key business and technology customers in the delivery of critical technology initiatives to meet our business goals and communicates effectively to the teams, partners and senior leadership.
• Provides technical guidance and oversight to development teams, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and to high standards.
• Leads United’s enterprise architecture strategy and provides end-to-end architecture oversight, new technology evaluation, and cloud governance based on business needs. Champions the business value of architecture as an enabler for business strategy implementation and technology innovation.
• Improve our technology environment by researching and analyzing industry trends and standard methodologies, benchmarking industry against internal processes and solutions. Defines software development guidelines, standards, and processes.
• Advise on enterprise architecture landscape, including technology information, data, security and integration.
• Evaluate, identify and develop technology strategy and planning deliverables to address IT risks and improve the effectiveness of the IT organization, specifically in a business application integration.
• Evaluate technology strategy, organization, business applications, and infrastructure.

Qualifications
What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

• 5 -7 years' experience in a program execution leadership role delivering infrastructure and cloud solution
• Information Technology Infrastructure Library Certification (ITIL)
• 15 + years of experience leading technology design and management of critical computing infrastructure across multiple technology subject areas
• Outstanding communicator with leadership presence, who can build effective internal and external contacts, and interact effectively with individuals at all levels
• Key skills in service support and IT operations, with a proficiency in operational trend analysis and critical thinking
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
• Capable of describing business impact and cost justification of initiatives as well as the transformational potential of emerging technologies that can improve United’s competitive advantage
• Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
• Significant knowledge in the design and implementation of information systems, and an excellent grasp of airlines operational processes
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
• Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
