Hybrid: The role will allow employees to work offsite but also require onsite work based on business needs. The selected candidate will be expected to commute to the innovation center to which they are assigned as their primary GM facility. This position requires an employee to be onsite 3 times per week.
Willingness to relocate to the Detroit, Michigan area, if necessary, to fulfill the current requirement of in-office attendance at least 3 days per week with the understanding that the current requirement could change in the future to include additional days of in-office attendance.
The Role
The position of Counsel – Complex Litigation is responsible for managing and coordinating activities related to the defense of commercial litigation matters (both class and individual actions) and the pursuit of claims on behalf of General Motors. Examples of such litigation matters include consumer and other class actions, actions arising out of contractual arrangements to which GM is a party, responses to subpoenas received by GM, regulatory disputes, product issues, and other sophisticated litigation and pre-litigation matters. The responsibilities of the position generally do not include labor and employment disputes or product liability cases.
The successful candidate will be an excellent lawyer who can work collaboratively, efficiently, and effectively on the company’s important litigation matters in a team environment.
What You’ll Do
- Work with GM’s eDiscovery team to implement best practice strategies for handling discovery in the most cost-effective manner possible.
- Liaising with other inside counsel, outside counsel and the relevant business personnel to manage very large cases and matters (including large class actions and MDLs) in an efficient and effective manner.
- Ensure that GM and the Legal Staff’s policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Assist with the analysis of claims and pleadings and the development of the most beneficial strategy from both a legal and business perspective.
- Ensure that a budget exists for all complex litigation matters and that matters are managed to budget. Review and approve invoices and expenditures consistent with the delegation of authority.
- Track legal trends and key developments in complex litigation.
- Respond to subpoenas and information demands as they are received by the company.
- Protecting the company’s resources and reputation, while also facilitating our client’s business objectives.
- Counsel clients within the GM organization on legal issues and best practices.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Excellent computer skills, including advanced use of Microsoft Office Suite
- A minimum of 5 years of legal experience handling complex litigation matters.
- Self-directed, solution-focused individual that with strong work ethic and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally to achieve enterprise-wide results.
- In-house experience is not required but would be beneficial.
- Demonstrated commitment to compliance, integrity, and quality
- Strong oral and written communicator with an aptitude for critical thinking and succinctly presenting the best course of action
- Demonstrated expertise in a variety of complex litigation matters, including substantial experience in all aspects of analysis, development of strategy, eDiscovery, motion practice, the use of experts and trial. Prior deposition and trial experience is beneficial.
- Ability to collaborate, build relationships, gain credibility, and partner effectively with others up and down a matrixed organization
- Law degree from a top-tier law school and admitted to practice in at least one jurisdiction in the United States and, if not admitted in Michigan, the ability to qualify for in-house counsel status in Michigan.
Compensation: The expected base compensation for this role is : $150,900- $231,200. Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
Bonus/Equity Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
