General description

In office work is required for the first six months for training. Training is held in person in training centers located in either Austin, Dallas, or Houston. Teleworking may be considered after the initial six months of training when certain working conditions are met per Audit Division’s policies. Travel reimbursements are not provided for teleworking but will be provided when traveling to work at taxpayer's location or to out-of-town training centers.



The Audit Division employs Tax Auditors nationwide with offices in New York City, the windy city of Chicago, Tulsa Oklahoma, Los Angeles, and multiple locations within Texas such as Austin, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, McAllen, etc.


Tax Compliance is the Audit Division’s primary focus. They strive to increase tax reporting accuracy and to promote greater voluntary compliance for the state of Texas.

This position is one of public trust and requires a high degree of confidentiality in handling all taxpayer records, services, audits and/or transactions.


These positions may be eligible for a flexible/hybrid work schedule if certain conditions are met; working arrangements may change at any time as business necessitates.


These positions will start on August 01, 2023.


Candidates who meet the education requirement and who have experience in full-time tax auditing or in state and local taxes may also apply. Salary and the entry level position will be commensurated based on experience.


Compensation for these positions will be based on location and experience:


Texas: $4,698.00 - $5,684.58

(Texas Locations: Austin, Corpus, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston, Katy, Lubbock, McAllen, Plano, San Antonio, Tyler )

New York/Chicago/Los Angeles: $5,370.00 - $6,497.70

Tulsa: $4,836.00 - $5,851.56


Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications


Tax Auditor I


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s or master's degree in Accounting; a bachelor's or Master's degree in Finance with 12 hours in accounting; or any degree with a total of 24 semester hours of accounting.



Tax Auditor II:


One (1) year as a Tax Auditor II with the Comptroller of Public Accounts. The Applicant left the agency in good standing within the past three years.



Tax Auditor III:


One (1) year as a Tax Auditor III with Comptroller of Public Accounts. Applicant left the agency in good standing within the past three years



Note: Experience as a full-time Tax Auditor with private, state, or other local government agencies may be considered for higher level positions on a case-by-case basis as long as they meet the minimum requirements for a Tax Auditor I.



LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Valid Drivers License



In this role you will:
  • Evaluate accounting records for accuracy and legal conformance
  • Compose clear and concise audit reports
  • Learn and use automated audit techniques

  • Salary is contingent upon qualifications. CPA employees in the same job classification, if selected, will be laterally transferred with no increase in salary. (An example might be an Accounts Examiner III in Revenue Administration who moves to an Accounts Examiner III in the Enforcement division).   • An interview score of 75% of the total points will provide Audit Management with a passing score to select top candidates for the hiring process. This includes a criminal background check and verification of employment.

  • All new hires are required to participate in a prescribed number of weeks of comprehensive classroom training during first six (6) months of employment. Final training grade must be 75 or above. Applicants may be asked to participate in a skills demonstration. Candidates that applied and were interviewed within the past six months, will not be reinterviewed. Your previous interview scores are still valid.


  • Per division policy, subject to approval, new hires are not eligible for transfer to another Audit office for two (2) years from date of employment.
