Job Description

Culinary Services Division (CSD), a division of Auxiliary Services, provides meals and specialty beverages for over 18,000 customers daily and is an integral part of campus life and the overall college experience. CSD proudly provides Montana State University students with not only a repertoire of various cuisines, cooking styles, and flavors, but a comfortable atmosphere to meet friends, study, and simply relax. The division is comprised of 2 residential dining halls, a commissary kitchen, 3 coffee shops and the Union Market retail operation, Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and Bobcat Stadium Concessions, Fork in the Road food truck, MSU Catering, Indulge In-House Bakery, and the Farm to Campus Program.

Our division offers shifts to meet your needs. We have hours available 7 days a week from 5:30am – 9:30pm or later if you are working a special event with MSU Catering or Concessions. This position is OT eligible!

Duties and Responsibilities
Under direction from the production management staff, the Cook III will be assigned to manage production and service for one concept within a large volume/high activity dining hall.
  • Directs staff in the cleaning of areas and equipment in accordance with the sanitarians recommendations.
  • Properly handles food in accordance with FDA food codes.
  • Monitors inventory, keeps records, and orders accordingly.
  • Directs the cleaning, disposition and storage of foods, supplies, and equipment.
  • And actively contributes to the team by performing other duties as needed in support of the department’s mission.
  • Performs other general kitchen duties.
  • As directed by the management team will train and direct staff.
  • Skillfully prepares a wide variety of recipes while positively and professionally interacting with customers.
  • Ensures quality product is being served.

Expand your culinary skills with special trainings provided during break times on things like advanced knife skills, sauce classes, to decorating cakes.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Progressively responsible high volume cooking experience and/or cooking multiple cuisines or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experience leading, directing, and/or training staff.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Advanced degree or certificate in the hospitality, culinary arts, or related field(s).
  • Experience organizing and timing kitchen production.
  • Experience with inventory control.

  • Work effectively and efficiently in close cooperation with CS staff in a team-oriented environment.

  • May occasionally work outside and in inclement weather assisting with special events.
  • Possess a 4-hour sanitation certification or have the ability to become certified.
  • Full-time and part-time. 10 and 12 month positions. Shifts vary across departments, 7 days per week during the academic year. All positions are eligible for full benefits 12 months of the year.
  • May work evenings, weekends, long hours, consecutive days during busy periods, and occasional holidays as the school and event schedule demands.
