Associate Tax Accountant Jobs

Prepares motor fuel tax returns accurately and timely. Reconciles assigned general ledger accounts. Researches tax issues and assists in audits. Assists in completion of special projects.

• Develops a basic understanding of Valero’s business.
• Assists managers and senior staff with special projects.
• Works with customers and outside taxing authorities to resolve tax issues.
• Prepares motor fuel tax returns that are complete and accurate.
• Ensures returns are timely filed.
• Analyzes ending inventory balances for certain states.
• Prepares wires and check requests for payment of taxes and coding to correct general ledger accounts.
• Prepares monthly reconciliations of tax accrual accounts.
• Researches new tax laws and regulations.

This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay.

• Ability to work accurately under deadlines preferred.
• Ability to cross-train in other department duties to ensure efficient coverage department responsibilities preferred.
• Ability to work efficiently preferred.
• Ability to accomplish work within required timelines, including short, long, and emergency timeframes preferred.
• Skilled in providing thorough, efficient, and effective customer service to individuals at all levels within the organization preferred.
• A minimum of 0-3 years motor fuels, sales tax, or other tax preparation experience required.
• Ability to abide by confidentiality requirements when working with sensitive information, results, and communications preferred.
• Public accounting experience or equivalent experience in industry preferred.
• Basic skills using Microsoft Office programs (i.e., Word and Excel) preferred.
• CPA, Enrolled Agent, or CPA candidate preferred.
• Ability to work with others to accomplish challenging assignments preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal methods preferred.
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple assignments to ensure completion of tasks within stated time requirements preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret company policies, regulatory guidelines, and other work-related documentation preferred.
• Bachelor’s or higher level degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

Position level and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
