Position Description

The Communications Interagency Coordinator plays a crucial role in facilitating effective communication and collaboration between various agencies and departments within the local government. This position focuses on coordinating and implementing communication strategies, initiatives, and campaigns to ensure consistent and timely dissemination of information to internal and external stakeholders. The Communications Interagency Coordinator acts as a liaison between departments, promotes interagency cooperation, and enhances the overall communication efficiency and effectiveness of the local government.


Work Location

This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work (within the state of Minnesota) with some days working remotely and some days working in the office.


Job Duties and Responsibilities


Strategic Planning

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy to promote interagency collaboration and streamline communication channels within the local government.
  • Identify communication objectives, target audiences, key messages, and desired outcomes for various interagency initiatives.
  • Collaborate with department heads and stakeholders to align communication efforts with organizational goals and priorities.


Coordination and Collaboration:

  • Organize regular interagency meetings, workshops, and events to enhance communication, exchange best practices, and identify areas for collaboration.
  • Foster strong working relationships with department heads, key personnel, and external partners to facilitate effective collaboration and information sharing.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for communication-related matters between different agencies and departments.

  • Oversee the development and maintenance of a centralized information repository that houses relevant documents, guidelines, templates, and other resources for interagency communication.
  • Coordinate the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data and information across departments to support evidence-based decision-making and ensure accurate reporting.
  • Implement systems and tools for efficient information sharing, including intranet portals, email lists, and communication platforms.


Communication Campaigns:

  • Develop and execute communication campaigns and initiatives to raise awareness about interagency projects, policies, and services.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communication activities, gather feedback, and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Help coordinate the creation of engaging content, such as press releases, newsletters, social media posts, and presentations, to effectively communicate key messages to internal and external stakeholders.


Crisis Communication:

  • Collaborate with relevant departments to develop crisis communication plans and protocols to ensure timely and accurate information dissemination during emergencies or critical incidents.
  • Assist the local government during crisis situations, coordinating messaging and media relations to manage public perception and maintain transparency.

Skills:

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to gather and interpret data to inform decision-making and measure communication effectiveness.
  • Proficiency in utilizing various communication channels and platforms, including social media, websites, and email marketing tools.
  • Knowledge of best practices in crisis communication and experience in managing communication during emergencies is desirable.
  • Proven experience in strategic communications, public relations, or a related role, preferably in a government or public sector setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail and the ability to adapt messaging for different audiences.
  • Familiarity with local government operations, policies, and regulatory frameworks.

Required Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Business Administration, a closely related field or equivalent (Master's preferred)

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Five years' experience performing duties related to those listed

An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.


Selection Process

The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.


Background Check

The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.


Drug and Alcohol Testing

All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Eligible List Statement

The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire three months after it has been established.


Interview Selection

The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.
