Job Description


Under limited supervision of the Executive Director of Community Outreach, the Arts and Culture Coordinator serves as the municipal representative and advisor for all arts and cultural affairs.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Perform project management and handles multiple projects at a time.
  • Attend public meetings for the purpose of explaining various aspects of the City’s arts, cultural and international programs.
  • Provide a monthly newsletter to Arts and Culture members notifying them of upcoming opportunities, concerns, and reminders of deadlines.
  • Conduct research and analysis necessary to implement the City’s Cultural Arts Master Plan.
  • Develop written reports, memos, Power Point presentations, and talking points on complex Arts and Cultural issues.
  • Write and administer grants and assist with event-related sponsorship acquisition.
  • Coordinate and oversee the implementation of special projects related to cultural service delivery within the community as prioritized through the City’s Cultural Arts Master Plan and departmental priorities including identifying grant opportunities, applying for funding, administering funds, and reporting on the projects.
  • Serve as liaison with internal and external stakeholders and working groups through presentations, testimony, and attendance of meetings and hearings. Stakeholders may include elected officials, City Staff, and civic leaders.
  • Provide support and assistance towards Economic Development’s efforts to retain and attract artists to the City.
  • Provide support and outreach to the cultural arts community in Galveston. Cultivate mutually beneficial relationships within the community to benefit the growth of the cultural sector.
  • Support the relationship between the City of Galveston and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Maintain relationships with arts organizations throughout the community including museums, galleries, performing arts organizations and arts education entities.
  • Coordinate communications related to communicating the activities, value and diversity of cultural offerings in the community, including but not limited to promotions, marketing and publications, social media, website marketing and publications, social media, website marketing, newsletters, e-blasts etc.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:


Knowledge


  • Principles and practices of project management.
  • Current marketing trends, including the utilization of social media.
  • Ability to express ideas effectively in written or oral form, and to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Principles and practices of contract administration.
  • Knowledge of the community, especially in arts and culture and international programs.
  • City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Principles and practices of state and federal grants and general grants administration.
Skill in:


  • Project management experience for cultural events or research projects required.
  • Effective leadership in a group setting such as boards, committees, working groups, etc.
  • Handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness, and sound judgment.
  • Skill in public speaking and ability to develop and give presentations.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


A High School Diploma or equivalent; AND three (3) years’ of experience in event coordinating, marketing, and community relations; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Work is performed in a standard office environment. Travel will be required on occasion.
