Accountant - General Accounting

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

Performs specialized technical work of considerable complexity and responsibility requiring a considerable amount of knowledge of theory and practice in accounting and finance, and expertise and experience in maintaining accounting records. Responsible for preparing periodic financial and analytical reports. Work is performed under occasional supervision only and requires initiative and independent judgment to analyze data or situations and determine solutions to problems within the limits of standard practice and VIA policy. May be required to assist in the preparation of forecasts and other studies based on various operating statistics.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Preparation of schedules, journal vouchers, budgets, reports, analysis, financial statements, audit work papers and other financial documentation.

Reconciliation of various general ledger accounts, employee leave balances, employee benefit balances, fixed asset records, and other financial data.

Analysis of operating statistics, budgetary variance, labor expense, revenue receipts and other financial and statistical data.

Maintenance of accounting support records including, but not limited to payroll, investment, budget, revenue, passenger, fixed assets and capital projects, general ledger or grant documentation.

Makes recommendations for improvements to accounting system and procedures.

This job description excludes marginal functions that are incidental to performing the job. Other duties may exist.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field and at least one year experience, or an equivalent combination.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of accounting.

Must be able to obtain knowledge of any applicable federal regulations.

Requires the ability to apply accounting theory and practice.

Must be able to analyze and interpret fiscal records and to prepare accurate and complete financial statements.

Knowledge of work in other sections to permit the capacity to perform in more than one section is desirable. Must have good planning and organizational skills.

Must be able to work independently using analytical skills, initiative and good judgment while performing work that requires making decisions based on precedent and VIA policy.

Must be able to maintain complex accounting records.

Must be able to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information such as employee pay rates and budget data.

Must have ability to understand complex materials such as reports, instructions, manuals, etc.

Must have the ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public and employees and maintain effective working relationships.

Must have a high degree of oral and written communicative skills.

Must have good judgment and strong analytical skills.

Must have working knowledge of automated accounting systems and of automated spreadsheet application.

Must be able to maintain good work attendance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have physical ability to occasionally bend, stoop, squat, kneel and climb stairs, and lift objects weighing 10 to 20 pounds such as files, computer printouts, and books.

Must be able to sit for long periods of time and be fully capable of utilizing calculator and

computer keyboards.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work involves deadlines and multiple priorities.

Works within normal office environment.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $4,487.00 - $6,127.00 per month
