About Edelman Smithfield

Edelman Smithfield is a strategic consultancy practice with the reach and resources of a leading global communications marketing firm. We advise public and private companies on strategic communications and investor relations to help effectively position them with the financial community during transformative events as well as during the normal course of business. Within our practice, we have established a leading Strategic Situations & Investor Relations vertical that counsels companies on effective communications to the investment community, including message and content development, earnings support, analyst and investor engagement, and investor days. Our offering also includes support for key strategic moments including M&A, IPOs and spin-offs, leadership transitions, crises, and shareholder activism.

About the Opportunity:

The Vice President, Strategic Situations & Investor Relations, will be responsible for developing and executing IR and strategic communications programs on behalf of our clients across multiple sectors. Ideal candidates will come from former investment and research analyst roles and/or will have direct investor relations experience, either with an agency or in-house IR position. Financial communications experience is preferred. The candidate must be fluent in the capital markets and possess a strong comfort level in counseling senior executives and investor relations teams of publicly traded companies on matters including disclosure, earnings and guidance, governance, marketing, investor targeting and relationship building, M&A, IPOs and spin-offs, shareholder activism and crisis situations.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Interact directly with client shareholders and covering sell-side analysts, discussing client business attributes, collecting feedback, supporting bank-sponsored non-deal road shows, and reacting to investment community informational needs.
  • Lead traditional “retainer” based IR clients as well as transaction-oriented project work (including M&A, IPOs, shareholder activism, and investor days).
  • Serve as a key day-to-day contact for clients, including CFO, CEO, IRO and other senior leaders.
  • Support the creation of investor communications plans and goals, including development of both tactical and strategic elements; manage against them.
  • Ensure team is proactive and highly responsive to client needs, anticipating upcoming deliverables and taking accountability for proper execution. Ensure junior staff is trained, supportive of team efforts and paying sufficient attention to detail.
  • Provide strategic counsel to clients on messaging and positioning across all external investor and financial communications, including: quarterly earnings news releases and conference call scripts, material corporate news, investor presentation and general 1x1 and group communications with the investment community. Manage and participate hands on in team development of messaging and positioning of company business model and corporate developments.
  • Partner with senior leaders in new business preparation and drive new business activity with a focus on winning and serving new accounts.
  • Monitor sell-side valuation models and counsel clients on effectively setting expectations around future performance.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in Business/Finance/Accounting or a related discipline is required. MBA and/or CFA a plus.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience within the capital markets, including either with a sell-or buy-side firm, investor relations agency or in an IR role at a public company. Investor relations specific or Wall Street experience a must for consideration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proactive and self-motivated; anticipate upcoming client projects and deliverables.
  • Ability to think critically and demonstrate good judgment.
  • Nnate desire to provide excellent service to clients.
  • Strong writing skills, including experience writing financially-oriented news releases and presentations.
  • Strong analytical skills; ability to analyze financial data sets and understand businesses across multiple industries.
  • Experience with relevant data platforms, including Bloomberg, Nasdaq IR Insight as well as proficient in MSFT Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Specific experience counseling companies through material transactions, including M&A and IPOs a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal skills; professional phone and email communications.
  • Aptitude for pitching and winning new business relationships.
  • Organized and detail-oriented; multi-task various responsibilities.
  • Strong comfort level counseling senior executives of publicly traded companies on IR related and financial communications matters.
