BACKGROUND:
Prosper Africa is a Presidential-level, national security initiative to strengthen the strategic and economic partnership between the United States and African countries. Prosper Africa builds a 21st Century U.S.-Africa partnership by increasing two-way trade and investment to strategic scale to create jobs, secure strategic sectors and supply chains, advance economic prosperity, and counter threats that include climate change and malign foreign influence. Through its NSC-directed role, Prosper Africa mobilizes and amplifies the resources of 17 U.S. federal agencies in Washington and the field to advance the U.S. Government’s strategy for Africa.
The Prosper Africa Executive Secretariat (PAES), supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) seeks a Senior Communications Advisor to provide support to the PAES Communications team. As a critical member of the Communications team, the Senior Communications Advisor, under the guidance of the Director of Strategic Communications, will provide guidance to Secretariat staff on the full range of internal and external communications functions, with a focus on digital and social media. The Senior Communications Advisor will contribute to the development and implementation of the Prosper Africa communications and outreach strategy, and support the development of related materials (e.g. digital and social media content, multimedia success stories, briefers, fact sheets, talking points) for Prosper Africa, and will support the drafting, collecting, investigating, managing, and distribution of information associated with Prosper Africa.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, include but are not limited to:
- Other related duties as assigned
- Provides strategic communications support and guidance for responses to media, public, and Congressional and other inquiries about the Prosper Africa initiative, as needed;
- Reviews the current six-month strategic communications plan and develops a strategic communications strategy and plan for Prosper Africa’s engagement at the U.S.-Kenya Roadshow and events during the U.N. General Assembly (UNGA);
- Delivers strategic communications support to the Prosper Africa Coordinator, including crafting strong messaging to position Prosper Africa Coordinator as a thought leader in the global business and policy space;
- Reviews information related to the Prosper Africa initiative, including brochures, speeches, talking points, and website content, to a range of external and internal audiences; Actively seeks and develops opportunities for USG participation in high-impact external events in the United States, including the U.S.-Kenya Roadshow with Ambassador Meg Whitman and events during the U.N. General Assembly (UNGA);
- Provides strategic communications support and guidance in the coordination of logistics related to key events in the United States;
KEY DELIVERABLES:
1. Develop a strategic communications plan to position and raise the profile of the Prosper Africa Coordinator’s engagement at the U.S.-Kenya Roadshow and the U.N. General Assembly (UNGA) in the media and global business and investment space. 2. Review six-month media plan and offer strategic recommendations for Prosper Africa’s participation in high-impact external events in the United States, including the U.S.-Kenya Roadshow and the U.N. General Assembly (UNGA). 3. Draft remarks, Talking Points, and speeches, as requested by the Prosper Africa Coordinator. 4. Conduct an audit and provide written feedback on Prosper Africa resources, including brochures, speeches, talking points, website content for external and internal audiences. 5. Conduct strategic communication duties, as requested by the Prosper Africa Coordinator and Comms Lead.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS, EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Required:
- Willingness and ability to comply with all Federal or Agency COVID requirements to access Agency facilities, such as vaccination/public health requirements.
- Knowledge of relevant disciplines including trade, private sector development, and investment.
- Master’s degree in a field such as international relations/studies, communications, journalism, social and political sciences, or similar areas with a minimum ten full years of public relations experience.
- Strong written and oral communication skills; capable of presenting information through reports and discussions to effectively support senior level officials responsible for providing guidance and direction across the interagency, and to work across teams and with various levels of leadership.
- Experience working and collaborating with U.S. government agencies and private sector organizations, including officials with international organizations, foreign and domestic government officials, and development partners.
- Ability to work collaboratively with team members, other offices within USAID/Washington, and USAID Missions in Africa, as well as inter-agency colleagues in the United States and Africa, U.S. and African government officials, donors, private sector officials, and implementing partners.
- U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance required.
- Proficient in Google (Docs, Drive, etc.) and Microsoft (MS Word, Excel, etc.) applications.
Preferred:
- Experience drafting a wide range of communications products, including fact sheets, success stories, talking points, and briefing papers.
- Strong relationships and experience with media engagement and experience working with U.S. and African media.
- Experience drafting press releases and media advisories and proactively pitching stories and collaborations, ideally in a U.S. Government context.
- Experience in multimedia storytelling, including proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, and other tools within the Adobe Suite preferred. Skills in graphic design preferred.
- Active Secret Security Clearance
- A demonstrated track record managing social media across multiple platforms for the U.S. Government or other mission-driven organizations. Skills in new and emerging social media platforms preferred.
