Job Description

The Genetic Perturbation Platform (GPP) of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is seeking an exceptional candidate to lead GPPs contributions to Broad’s flagship Cancer Dependency Map (DepMap) project.

The DepMap is a vibrant growing research project internationally recognized by both the academic and the pharma/biotech communities. Its goal is to define cancer cell dependencies across a broad range of cancers using a variety of approaches including over 1000 genome-wide CRISPR screens. The GPP is a worldwide leader in functional annotation of the genome. We pioneer functional genomics technologies and methodologies and their application to biological discovery. For over a decade, GPP has created the screening technologies and executed the screens that constitute a major, critical piece of the DepMap project.

This role in GPP to oversee GPP’s DepMap related work, as well as other associated projects, is an ideal position for a scientist who wants to apply evolving, cutting-edge technologies in a team environment to create data and resources that have global impact on cancer research. The successful candidate should enjoy systems biology approaches, thrive in collaborative environments, and be interested in both leading and directly contributing to projects. The candidate should also demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with team members at all levels. We offer an intellectually stimulating, highly collaborative, scientifically rigorous, and fun environment.

The Broad Institute provides a dynamic research environment with close links to top academic institutions across the Boston area and provides the potential for your contributions to be used and recognized worldwide. We pride ourselves on being creative and forward-thinking not only in the way we approach our science but also in the way we support our people.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Makes significant contributions to scientific papers; is a resource/ author/ co-author for reports and presentations and may participate in the writing of grant proposals.
  • Work with other leaders in GPP to establish best practices for CRISPR screens, and coordinate work related to screening efforts.
  • Lead a team in GPP to plan and execute CRISPR screening and related experiments to discover cancer dependencies.
  • Attend meetings at Broad to learn about other science at the Broad, and to represent the Genetic Perturbation Platform and DepMap.
  • Collaborate closely with experimentalist and computational biologists in GPP and the Broad Cancer Program to design and plan new DepMap experiments.
  • Incorporate new advances from GPP R&D into the DepMap research plan, and conversely, to capture critical experience from DepMap experiments to inform GPP screening practices and R&D.
  • Together with leaders in Broad’s Cancer Program, develop the next generation of strategies to identify and characterize cancer dependencies
  • Present work at group meetings, Broad seminars, partner meetings, and conferences.

Requirements

  • Excellency in written and verbal communication
  • Innovative and analytical thinker with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Highly self-motivated and enthusiastic about taking a hands-on approach to collaborative scientific discovery efforts.
  • Ph.D. degree with 3+ years of experience in molecular biology, cancer biology, bioengineering, biophysics, or related discipline.
  • Quantitative biology mindset and a passion for technology development
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture

Preferred

  • Experience with assay development and troubleshooting
  • Experience with analysis of large-scale datasets
  • Experience with CRISPR screening, NGS-based assays
