Job Description

Research Collaborations is a functional unit of Comparative Medicine (CM) and actively engages in partnerships with NIBR drug discovery and development Disease Areas (DAs) Project Teams, providing high quality preclinical in-vivo research work for drug discovery and development. We deliver both high quality hands-on technical in-vivo expertise as well as in-vivo pharmacology project coordination/leadership capabilities, utilizing our innovative technologies, necropsy, imaging, flexibility with weekdays and weekend study coverage, and in-vivo training/certification capability-platforms. We are the centralized core for best-in-class in-vivo studies partnering with NIBR DAs, immersed in the animal well-being 3Rs values, while building a greater understanding of the need and insight to answer the targeted biology question. Our partnership work helps to move NIBR discovery projects for patients’ unmet medical needs through quality in vivo research data generation.
We are looking for a Research Scientist to coordinate and run in-vivo research studies and projects to support the diverse and exciting NIBR research project portfolio.
Major accountabilities include:
  • Experience of operating within a barrier-maintained facility conducting in-vivo studies utilizing micro-isolator techniques
  • Participate in scientific discussions, performing critical review of experimental protocols and identifying the best approach for in-vivo studies according to project needs.
  • Rotating on-call weekend support, holiday coverage, early morning or late evening dosing.
  • Able to perform advanced, intermediate, and basic technical skills (compound administration, blood/tissue collection, clinical observation, necropsy, aseptic technique, implants, suturing, staples, surgical models, etc.) on applicable in-house species.
  • Responsible for pursuing continuous learning/professional development opportunities, enhancing/expanding skill set, and reviewing CM techniques.
  • Interest in data interpretation, statistics, and presentation to propose next steps to the customer.
  • Be an excellent team player, ensuring appropriate performance, training, and professional development of yourself.
  • Closely interact with scientists within NIBR providing project administration, optimal support, ability to build up a robust professional network and generate high quality data.
  • Schedule, perform and coordinate state-of-the-art animal experimentation with the highest ethical and technical standards, supporting, setting up and validating animal models independently.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with all institutional and regulatory protocols, policies, and guidelines.
  • Continuously evaluate, implement, and train on newest techniques and scientific knowledge to ensure state-of-the-art in-vivo work.
Qualified candidates will have a strong commitment to providing quality research support, dedication to animal welfare and team performance, while expanding both their scientific knowledge and in vivo technical skills. The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $76,300 and $114,500/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Minimum Requirements
Schedule: four-day, full time, shifted schedule either Sunday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Saturday
What you will bring to the role:
Education:
  • Bachelor or master’s degree in Life Sciences or equivalent experience
Experience:
  • Candidates must be dependable, independent, and driven in the pursuit of first in class science, work well in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment, and focused on attention-to-detail to provide consistent, high-quality results.
  • Strong customer-orientation used to communicate with a broad range of stakeholders, and strong aptitudes as a team player.
  • 3+ years’ experience in a technical skills tract laboratory animal program preferred.
  • Strong theoretical and practical expertise in animal experimentation with focus on small animals
  • High learning ability, ‘can-do’ solution-oriented approach, proactive.
  • Expertise in different disease and mechanistic models
  • Strong commitment to animal welfare, research support, and high quality in-vivo focused science
  • Fluency in English
  • High ethical approach, committed to high standards of animal welfare.
  • Good planning, prioritization, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Blood and tissue sampling (Anatomy/Necropsy knowledge preferred)
  • Must be able to work from a standing position for prolonged periods of time and perform repetitive motion tasks.
  • Able to perform advanced, intermediate, and basic technical skills.
