Position Title: Principal Advisor to the Deputy Mayor

The Team You’ll Work With:
The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Strategic Initiatives ensures that City government solves problems
through holistic, accountable, and transparent means. With a focus on many of the administration’s top
priorities – from creating opportunities for young people to strengthening the city’s civic infrastructure –
the office works in partnership with stakeholders inside and outside of city government to develop,
scale, coordinate, and deliver policies, plans and operations in an equitable and sustainable way.
The Deputy Mayor also oversees the following agencies and offices: the Department of Youth and
Community Development, the Office of Food Policy, the Office of Non-Profit Services, the Office of
Childcare and Early Childhood Education, the Center for Innovation through Data Intelligence, the Office
of Youth Employment, the Children’s Cabinet, and the Commission on Gender Equity.
The Problems You’ll Solve:
You will help oversee priority initiatives across the Deputy Mayor’s portfolio of agencies and business units,
making key recommendations and decisions on several portfolios. You will manage a team of Senior Advisors and
work alongside staff, serving as the primary liaison between the Deputy Mayor, agencies, and business units to
report on engagement efforts and initiatives of business units, agencies, non-profits organizations and CBO’s.
Principal Advisor
- Develops long-term planning centered around Mayoral and agency priorities.
- Advises the Deputy Mayor of Strategic Initiatives on a wide range of priorities.
- Manages a team of senior advisors who assess policy related initiatives on an ongoing basis, such
as SYEP, Early Childcare & Childhood Education, Summer Rising, Non-Profits, Food Policy and
other Deputy Mayor and Mayoral priorities.
- Makes key decisions and recommendations to the Deputy Mayor and where applicable the
- Works closely with the Chief of Staff to manage communications planning and coordination with
(agency, inter-agency and otherwise) centered on city efficiency, agency, and stakeholder
collaboration.
- Lead the charge in ensuring coordination and joint efforts between CUNY, DYCD and DOE on
- Quantitatively and qualitatively assess policy related initiatives on an ongoing basis and make
sure to appropriately communicate pertinent and sensitive information.
- Represent the Deputy Mayor at meetings with stakeholders, staff, and internal and external
opinions, and attitudes, identify stakeholder needs, provide interpretation and clarification,
develop response options, and generate cooperation policy initiatives.
- Analyze and make recommendations on projects that raise issues and/or concerns.
- Establishing clear and consistent communications with internal and external stakeholders,
- Creating alignment between policies, practices, and regulations across agencies.
- Working closely with the Deputy Mayor and advisement team to continue the development and
implementation of the Youth Pathways Blueprint – across DOE, DYCD, CUNY
About You:
• You will have a BA degree from an accredited college in public policy, law, social work, psychology,
sociology, business; Master’s degree preferred
- You have 8-10 years of full-time professional experience; 5 of those years serving in senior roles.
- You have a minimum of 5 years’ experience managing staff.
- You will be well-versed in policy analysis, planning, implementation research, project management.
- Strong written communication and public speaking
- You have experience leading and managing multiple complex projects in a fast-paced setting.
- You can think creatively, embrace new approaches and pioneer innovative solutions to intricate problems,
- You are flexible and have a creative approach to making plans, using resources, and solving problems.
- You are a problem solver who makes decisions in a timely manner.
- You are results-driven and self-motivated.
Salary
The City of New York Office of the Mayor’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary,
equity for all full-time roles and exceptional benefits.
Our cash compensation range for this role is $190,000 - $199,000.
Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on candidate experience and expertise, and other
factors.
