Job Description
The Suffolk County Office For People With Disabilities is seeking to fill the role of Office Assistant in their Hauppauge office.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs clerical and typing/word processing duties of limited difficulty and responsibility. Duties of the position follow well-defined procedures and methods. Detailed instructions and close supervision are received at the beginning of work and on new assignments, but regular routine tasks are performed more independently and some initiative and judgment are utilized as experience is gained. The work is performed under the direct supervision of assigned supervisory personnel, and is reviewed upon completion for content and accuracy.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
  • Answers routine questions regarding departmental procedures in response to personal and telephone inquiries
  • Posts simple data to various office records, prepares, and types reports based on tabulations of posted data and simple arithmetical computations;
  • Operates a variety of simple office equipment, including computers with word processing and other applications;
  • Enters data on computerized records;
  • Receives and checks applications, vouchers, or other forms for accuracy of content and compliance with procedural and regulatory requirements;
  • May serve as receptionist.

The target salary for this position is: $15/hr.
  • This position does not offer relocation assistance at this time

The days and hours for this role are flexible, but must adhere to the following:
Work within the work week of Monday through Thursday, and for the work hours encompass two full days (7.5 hours per day) between the hours of 9:00AM-4:30PM, and one half day (3.75 hours) within the hours of 9:00AM-12:30PM
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
  • Some knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic;
  • Some knowledge of office terminology, procedures, equipment and clerical techniques;
  • Ability to make arithmetical computations and tabulations accurately and with a reasonable rate of speed;
  • Skill in typing accurately; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Ability to learn assigned tasks and to adhere to prescribed departmental routines;
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the general public;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • 1+ Year(s) of professional work experience performing clerical duties
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
This Role Is A Provisional Appointment
A provisional appointment, which occurs only in the competitive class, is a temporary appointment to a position for which no eligible list exists or for which an eligible list exists with fewer than three candidates who are willing to accept the position. In order to become permanent, the employee who is provisionally appointed must take the next examination for the position in question. The appointment to the position is then made from among the three highest scoring passing candidates who indicate their willingness to accept the position. Civil Service law does not compel the appointing authority to choose the provisional employee should he or she be one of the three candidates.
