Job Title: HR Specialist (Focus on Leave of Absence, ADA, Learning & Development)

Salary Range: $55,000 - $65,000

Type: Exempt

Reports To: Sr. Total Rewards Manager

Location: Denver, Colorado


Position Objective

The HR Specialist provides support to the Human Resources department with overall support and ownership of Leave of Absence Administration (includes FMLA, Bereavement, Personal Leaves, Military, etc..), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) management/support/guidance and other benefits administration support, as needed.


The HR Specialist will also be responsible for executing the Learning & Development (L&D) vision and strategy for Schwazze, under the direction of the Sr. Total Rewards Manager & VP of HR. This role will be responsible for the overall execution and success of the L&D Programs, including but not limited to new hire orientation, onboarding, leadership development, basic “Manager 101” and other developmental programs as directed.


Essential Functions

ADA Program Management (25%)

  • Conducts disability eligibility analyses, provides referrals, reviews and gains approvals on reasonable accommodations, and connects individuals with services to support their professional goals.
  • Partners with HR and the business leaders to review job descriptions, specifically focusing on the Essential Functions of all jobs within the company, and documenting accordingly in company database.
  • Provides support to the HR Department with guidance regarding individuals with disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Proactively partners with employees to engage in the interactive dialogue process through the ADA, to determine whether a reasonable accommodation is required to perform the essential functions of an individual’s job, while maintaining proper documentation and communication throughout the process.
  • Educates the managers regarding support for individuals with disabilities and facilitates compliance with the ADA and related federal, state, and local regulations and Company policies.


FMLA & Other Leave of Absence Administration (25%)

  • Maintain current knowledge of federal, state, and municipal leave laws and regulations; propose revisions to internal documents, policies, and communications as necessary to ensure Company compliance.
  • Serve as the point of contact for absence inquiries, educating employees and managers on the leave process, related policies and procedures, as well as time entry.
  • Coordinate continuation of benefits and or act as a resource to employees regarding medical benefits end dates, along with related short-term and long-term disability benefit issues.
  • Coordinate, track and manage Company leaves of absence – including FMLA, Company provided leaves, military leaves, worker’s compensation leaves, etc. Responsibilities to include sending required notices, forms and letters, and determining leave eligibility and leave approvals/denials and re-certifications on a strict deadline.
  • Communicate with employees, managers, and HR professionals to coordinate the return-to-work process, including leave expirations.

Education and Experience

  • Experience creating, administering, and executing HR policies and procedures
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and demonstrating strong proficiency in business writing.
  • 1-2 years of experience in HR, specifically managing or support a company’s ADA process is required
  • Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Commitment to ongoing self-development and learning
  • Experience following strict policy and protocols, utilizing form templates and effectively owning a process.
  • Solid knowledge of HR best practices and employment laws (specifically with FMLA & ADA).
  • Ability to analyze data and develop compelling presentations to drive the advancement of the company.
  • In lieu of relevant HR experience, a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with emphasis in Human Resources is required.
  • Excellent follow-up skills and a keen sense of urgency for time sensitive matters.
  • Proficient computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently, balance multiple priorities, while meeting deadline in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Amicable demeanor, adaptable and agile nature, combined with a steadfast commitment to hard work, to foster personal and professional development.


A Plus, but not Required

  • HR certification (e.g., PHR, SHRM-CP)


Working Conditions (Schedule, Environment, Travel)

  • Reliable transportation is a requirement.
  • Monday – Friday; holidays, nights and weekend work may be required based on the needs of the business.
  • Requires ability to travel to company owned locations across both states – up to 20% of the time.
  • Possess the ability to perform tasks that involve sitting, standing, walking, and driving as necessary.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an MED Badge in the state of Colorado
  • Full-time position is based in Colorado
