Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics.
As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry.
The establishment of FRIB was funded by the DOE-SC, Michigan State University (MSU), and the State of Michigan, and user facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. Since 2010, MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of graduate programs.

Purpose:
The Human Resources Coordinator will support the daily operations of the HR department.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Review position descriptions to ensure compliance with the MSU classification system
- Use knowledge of HR principles and experience to exercise independent judgement in responding to requests for information, policy interpretation, c.b.a. review, etc.
- Assist with the implementation and maintenance of human resource initiatives and projects as directed.
- Author FRIB work instructions and disseminate to the FRIB HR team
- Assist with basic coaching for line managers in goal setting and performance review development
- Provide assistance to line managers for candidate sourcing and building pipelines for recruitment
- Assist with basic coaching for line managers in goal setting and performance review development
- Use the FRIB information system and university BI reporting systems to develop and compile reports as requested
- Work with line managers and facilitate personnel changes as needed
- Provide assistance to line managers for candidate sourcing and building pipelines for recruitment
- Process documentation and prepare reports relating to personnel activities (staffing, recruitment, training, performance evaluations, etc.)
- Use the FRIB information system and university BI reporting systems to develop and compile reports as requested
- Review staffing requests with line managers to ensure positions are requested at the appropriate level for execution of work
- Author FRIB work instructions and disseminate to the FRIB HR team

- Review the performance excellence files for alignment with position description
- Provide support for human resources operations through serving as a point of contact and advisor for general inquiries. Manage the HR inbox and triaging requests for service.
- Use knowledge of HR principles and experience to exercise independent judgement in responding to requests for information, policy interpretation, c.b.a. review, etc.
- Complete other duties as assigned within the scope of the role.
- Assist in managing content and the data integrity of employee personnel files, HR databases, and other HR records.
- Review position descriptions to ensure compliance with the MSU classification system

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- General knowledge of I-9 requirements and immigration laws related to specific visa types.
- Ability to demonstrate commitment to positive workplace culture and ethical decision-making.
- Skill in critical thinking, fact-finding, problem analysis, and the development of action plans to solve problems with oversight from the line manager.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement in responding to requests for information, policy interpretation, c.b.a. review, etc.
- Ability to accurately create or maintain records and documents, including sensitive information preserving confidentiality.
- Ability to identify, optimize, and effectively utilize resources to meet goals.
- Ability to gather, analyze and present facts, communicate effectively (both orally and written), using tact and courtesy, and ability to plan, organize work, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to produce quality deliverables using Microsoft Office, SharePoint, process mapping, HRIS, or LMS software.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships, influence key partners, and deliver results in a collaborative environment.
- Basic knowledge of employment laws and practices, human resources and compliance topics, MSU and unit policy and procedure, and contractual bargaining agreements (CBA’s).
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in human resources, a related social science field, or a field related to the operations of the department; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a human resources function or an area related to departmental operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with HRIS and ATS software and systems.
- Knowledge of Human Resource and business fundamental practices and procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.
