Job Description
The San Diego Rescue Mission is built on beliefs that speak to the heart. We believe this is more than a job, it's a calling to love our neighbors and those in need the way that Jesus would. In our programs, we create a holistic approach to recovery and rehabilitation while ensuring that our building is a safe haven for men, women, and children who have experienced homelessness.

The Human Resources (HR) Assistant brought into the Mission understands and embodies our calling of changing homelessness in San Diego County through Christ. This individual must also further the mission, vision, and values of the San Diego Rescue Mission through the work they perform by being the go-to person for all things HR related. This position mainly works from our headquarters office in Downtown San Diego, but periodic travel is required between our adjacent locations in Oceanside and National City.

Generally, our HR Assistant will be involved in coordinating activities such as employee engagement and culture, employee records, employee training and development, employee relations, benefits management, and recruitment and retention (including the employee lifecycle and performance management). With the greater HR team and Director of HR, we wear many hats and tend to roll up our sleeves to get things done, which means you never stop learning.

This position reports to and works closely with the Director of Human Resources where they will perform administrative tasks and services to support effective and efficient operations of the San Diego Rescue Mission's HR department. Due to the nature of this position and the extreme sensitivity of employee records, the candidates must be highly dependable and able to maintain the strictest confidentiality.

Key job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducts or assists with new hire orientation.
  • Acts as a liaison between the organization and external benefits providers and vendors, which may include health, disability, and retirement plan providers.
  • Performs periodic audits of HR files and records to ensure that all required documents are collected and filed appropriately.
  • Provides clerical support to the HR department.
  • Assists with planning and execution of special events such as benefits enrollment, organization-wide meetings, employee recognition events, holiday parties, and departmental functions.
  • Answers frequently asked questions from applicants and employees relative to standard policies, benefits, hiring processes, etc.; refers more complex questions to appropriate senior-level HR staff or management.
  • May assist with payroll functions including processing, answering employee questions, fixing processing errors, and distributing checks.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date human resource files, records, and documentation.
  • Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of human resource files and records.

Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.

To perform this job successfully, the candidate must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Very people-oriented and supports a positive faith-based working environment.
  • Ability to be continuously learning
