Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Human Resources, the Head of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility will be responsible for assessing the organization's current DEIA position and developing a strategy and corresponding programs in conjunction with the DEIA Council and Executive Leadership Team. The Head of DEIA will be responsible for defining a holistic strategy for our employees, communities, and visitors. This role will champion the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive culture. The Head of DEIA will refine and drive the right programs across all functions to thread DEIA principles and practices throughout the organization. We seek a highly motivated and passionate individual who is comfortable working with staff members at all levels to provide overall support, especially working through challenging issues with the goal of creating a more inclusive environment.


ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of effective strategies that support the recruitment, retention, and advancement of underrepresented groups.
  • Build and grow relationships within our organization and advance our relationships on a local and national level with our DEIA community.
  • Ensure that strategy and programs align with the organizations’ DEIA objectives and goals. Develop and implement a communication plan focusing on employee feedback related to DEIA needs and recommendations. Effectively communicate progress and roadblocks related to progress.
  • Establish, educate, and coach managers on inclusive leadership behaviors, progressive ways to enhance diversity and inclusion on their teams, have courageous conversations and promote inclusiveness across the organization.
  • Maintain familiarity of current information regarding relevant laws and regulations to improve our own policies.
  • Take the lead on the development, execution, and action plan for staff engagement surveys.
  • Partner with the DEIA Council and Managers to serve as a trusted advisor, providing expertise and consultation in change leadership, DEIA programs, talent management and development.
  • Work collaboratively across the organization to develop, monitor, and report on actionable and measurable DEI goals, strategies, and metrics.
  • Review and monitor the Memorial and Museum’s strategies, products, practices, and facilities to ensure we are compliant. Serve as the main contact person for visitors with disability questions, concerns and requests of auxiliary aids or services such as ASL interpreting, sighted guides, Braille materials etc. to serve our visitors with disabilities more effectively.
  • Work with the exhibitions department to ensure programming includes DEIA principles, tenets, and representations of racism, sexism, ableism, and bias within the organization.
  • Identify activities and opportunities to further DEIA within the organization while keeping in mind the context of the broader community.
  • Lead the organization’s Wellness effort to ensure a strategic approach to supporting staff member’s physical, mental, financial, and social wellbeing.
  • Participate with Operations and Museum staff to develop and provide accessibility training for all Museum staff and keep all Museum staff informed of accessibility issues.


QUALIFICATIONS/SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferred.
  • Experience working with cultural heritage and/or sensitive content preferred.
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience, with at least 2 years of a DEI focus.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to form relationships, build trust and work collaboratively.
  • Passionate, engaged, and self-motivated with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Flexible team player with the skills and ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Experience working with access and accommodations for people with disabilities and older adults preferred.
  • Knowledge of industry benchmarks, leading practices, and innovations in the DEIA discipline.


REQUIRED VOLUNTEER SUPPORT FOR ORGANIZATIONAL EVENTS

  • Assist with other special projects and events in support of 9/11 Memorial & Museum, as assigned.
  • Participate in the annual 5K fundraiser and 9/11 commemoration, as assigned.
