Job Description
Position Title: Executive Director
Reports to: Board of Directors
Location: Berkeley, California
Remote/Hybrid: 2-3 days in office; 2-3 days remote
Salary: $140,000-155,000/year (including health & other benefits) based on skills and experience
Schedule: Full-time
ORGANIZATION
Partnerships for Trauma Recovery is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to healing the psychosocial impacts of trauma among international survivors of human rights abuses, persecution related to identity and beliefs, and forced displacement resulting from war, torture, gender-based, criminal, and other forms of interpersonal violence. PTR provides psychological, psychosocial, and psychiatric care for asylum seekers and refugees from around the world; conducts community outreach; supports training; and advocates for policies to prevent trauma and re-traumatization among international survivors of violence.
THE ROLE
This is an exciting opportunity to lead a fast-growing nonprofit organization working at the nexus of human rights and mental health into its next phase of development. The ideal candidate for this position has a passion for and personal connection to Partnership for Trauma Recovery’s mission of addressing the psychosocial impacts of trauma among international survivors of human rights abuses through culturally responsive and trauma-informed mental health care and case management, community outreach, training, and policy advocacy. The ideal candidate will be an inspirational DEI-centered leader and strategic thinker. Steeped in human-centered management, the Executive Director is committed to dismantling systems of oppression while leading the fundraising, strategic development, communications, management, and administration of the organization and responding to new initiatives and needs, as they arise. The Executive Director is responsible for and will work in close collaboration with the Board of Directors, Clinical Director, Director of Operations, and other PTR staff to maintain current funder relationships and expand PTR’s base of support. This position requires leadership, flexibility, creativity, resourcefulness, and a passion for promoting human rights, peace, and psychosocial wellbeing.
Responsibilities
Executive/Board Partnership
  • Identifies, assesses, and keeps the board of directors apprised of internal and external issues affecting the organization to inform program delivery and organizational strategy.
  • Assists board president with board development and recruitment to ensure diversity and bylaw adherence.
  • Staffs, prepares for and attends board and appropriate committee/task force meetings. This includes the Executive Director report, financial reports, and other program data.
Leadership and Strategy
  • Strategically leads initiatives to strengthen organizational sustainability, including strategic planning and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts.
  • Empowers, supports, manages and guides 3-4 direct reports and 25-28 total staff using a strengths-based approach that promotes a safe and secure workplace culture that nurtures staff development and performance. This includes the coaching, mentoring and development of staff.
Organization and Financial Management
  • Directs the preparation of, manages and oversees an annual budget in accordance with funding authority, local, state and federal guidelines.
  • Provides programmatic oversight and directs the preparation of reports to funders in a manner that ensures agency is aligned with annual programmatic goals and financial audit standards.
  • Develops and revises personnel policies, agency bylaws, project management systems and related policies and procedures as needed to ensure compliance.
Development and Fundraising
  • Establishes and stewards relationships with prospective and current donors and supporters on an ongoing basis to inspire continued giving.
  • Overseeing the grant procurement process including providing grant writing, grant submission and grants management support to development staff.
  • Partners with development on the establishment of a major gifts program that spans the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors as well as the maintenance of donor and gift acknowledgement systems.
  • Leads PTR’s fundraising strategy to ensure a solid foundation of support for existing and future programming in collaboration with the Board and development staff and volunteers to motivate involvement and achieve fundraising goals.
Communications and External Relations
  • Establishes strong, positive relationships with local government officials and foundation leaders and collegial, mutually beneficial relationships with leaders of other community non-profits.
  • Increases PTR’s visibility and serves as the organization’s primary spokesperson, brand champion and advocate and raises PTR’s profile by being available to print and broadcast journalists.
  • Engages with public policy leaders and other influencers, helping to shape the agenda and decision making of government officials and other external stakeholders.
  • Contributes to PTR’s communications efforts including web-based communication and written materials.
Requirements
Qualifications
  • A graduate degree in public policy, business, nonprofit management, social work, international development or other relevant field or a bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience.
  • At least 10 years of nonprofit sector experience, including:
  • Solid fundraising experience working with government, private, institutional and private donors, diversifying and increasing annual organizational revenue and budget size.
  • Five years of organizational and programmatic management/administration experience with excellent people skills.
  • Experience overseeing and/or participating in the provision of trauma-informed services and working cross-culturally with diverse international populations, refugees and/or asylum seekers in particular.
  • Demonstrated success in leading organizations as an Executive Director, or member of the senior leadership team, of an organization with an annual operating budget greater than $1M.
Preferred Experience & Skills
  • Comfort with MS word, excel, web research and databases.
  • Experience managing organizational change, working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and leading group dynamics.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication relevant to the needs of a nonprofit organization interfacing with donors and the general public. Ability to write formally and informally, with professional and engaging language.
  • Skilled fundraiser including a successful track record in donor outreach and solicitation, overseeing the expansion of development efforts and revenue growth as well as grant prospecting, writing, submission and reporting.
  • Strong experience in immigration/refugee mental health.

Benefits
Salary: $140,000-155,000/year (including health & other benefits) based on skills and experience
