Director Of International Strategy and Operations
Location - NYC
Reports to Assistant Managing Editor, Int’l Desk
The New York Times has committed to creating a culture and an environment in which we can all do our best work, including making our newsroom more diverse and equitable and our editorial practices more inclusive. In the newsroom, we are putting in place significant infrastructure to support this work on an ongoing basis — in large part by adding new deputy roles to the leadership teams of many of our departments.
Our international news machine consists of three editing hubs, 30-plus bureaus, and nearly 300 correspondents, editors and staff working for more than a half-dozen departments. The largest, the International Desk, is a sprawling operation in itself, one that has grown rapidly in scale and complexity in recent years and is critical to meeting the company’s journalistic and audience goals.
At the center of all this is the Director of International Strategy and Operations, a newsroom leader who must think strategically about our global editorial priorities, audience and allocation of resources; drive the transformation of our hubs and bureaus into a 24/7 digital operation that puts readers first; build better systems for managing our people around the world, their movements and careers; and pull together teams across the company to tackle an array of challenges through the lens of long-term international growth, including budgeting and finance, security and facilities, recruitment and relocation, and workflow and communication across time zones.
The Director of International Strategy and Operations is responsible for managing strategic initiatives under the leadership of the International Editor, and will work closely with Newsroom Strategy and the newsroom’s Culture and Careers group to coordinate across departments and contribute to and adopt new newsroom-wide approaches. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and problem solver with the analytical, organizational and leadership skills to address some of the newsroom’s most complicated challenges.
Main responsibilities:
  • Bring together departments to develop policies, systems and solutions that support long-term international growth, serving as the main point of contact for Newsroom Strategy, Finance, Operations, Security, Culture & Careers, Human Resources and Global Mobility
  • Collaborate with International desk leadership to set and communicate desk goals and determine how to measure progress and success
  • Manage the desk’s budget, aligning resource allocation across bureaus with newsroom priorities; setting staffing strategy with desk leadership, and ensuring best practices in hiring
  • Oversee the International desk’s efforts to collect and analyze audience data, working with Audience to share insights to drive coverage and story promotion as well as workflow and organizational change
  • Build towards a truly global 24/7 digital operation, regularly assessing resources, organization structure, communications and workflow across hubs to optimize for the desk’s goals around the world
  • Build and lead initiatives to address the desk’s recruitment, career development and mobility needs, including performance review processes and maintenance of a global personnel tracking system
  • Develop relationships with personnel around the world to identify challenges, opportunities and staff concerns, and work with desk leadership and other departments to address them in a systematic way
  • Consult across desks and departments to shape and drive the newsroom’s approach to executing the broader enterprise strategy for international growth
Qualifications
  • Commitment to The New York Times mission and values
  • Ability to communicate in writing and in person clearly, concisely and persuasively
  • Experience working in or with newsrooms - including coverage, workflow, culture and careers - as a journalist or in a journalism operations or leadership role
  • Demonstrated ability to manage operations, including setting up, overseeing and continuously improving systems, workflow and processes to increase department effectiveness
  • Commitment and track record of improving organizational culture and making organizations more diverse, equitable and inclusive
  • Track record of developing strong and trusting relationships, collaborating, and building consensus
  • Strong drive to take the initiative to surface challenges and opportunities, and to develop and act on solutions
  • Experience with people management, including recruiting and hiring, performance and feedback, career development, training, culture and communication would be a plus
  • A strong analytical and planning skill set, including the ability to identify strategic issues, frame and analyze problems in a structured way, and develop and implement high-impact, actionable solutions
This is an excluded position that reports directly to the International Editor. The annual base pay range for this role is between 160,000 and 190,000 USD
The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve. Our journalism and the products we build in the service of that journalism greatly benefit from a range of perspectives, which can only come from diversity of all types, across our ranks, at all levels of the organization. Achieving true diversity and inclusion is the right thing to do. It is also the smart thing for our business. So we strongly encourage women, veterans, people with disabilities, people of color and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.
