Job Title: Communities Manager – Research [Physical Sciences]

Location(s): New York, Beijing, or Shanghai - Hybrid working model

Purpose of the Role

The Community Engagement team manages a portfolio of engagement channels, including online communities, blogs, and social media channels. The Community Manager – Research is responsible for the management and delivery of a number of highly successful online engagement platforms and channels at Springer Nature that seek to strengthen our relationships with our authors, and the wider research community around the world. This role has a particular focus on the Research Communities platform which caters to research audiences at all career stages and publishes over 2500 blog posts a year.

Responsibilities

Maintaining, supporting and expanding the Communities: Managing the day to day running of a set of Research Communities, including managing users, reviewing content and encouraging engagement across the platform.

• Working with the other Communities Managers and Senior Communities Manager to regularly review and update the Communities to provide a consistent and positive experience for all users
• Working with internal teams to establish or improve the collection of data on key measures and analytics
• Moderating community content, including relevant comments on communities and on social media, taking action where appropriate to enforce our community and social media policies
• Managing the development and delivery of a program of activities that seek to recognize and celebrate Community members, whether that be regular contributors, early career researchers or under-represented groups
• Monthly reporting on analytics and progress against KPIs
• Managing projects to expand the efficient running of the author invitation processes to join the Research Communities
• Supporting and delivering the Community Engagement team strategy

Provide platform and content support to external and internal audiences: Ensuring that community members receive the best possible service whilst working with Springer Nature.

• Championing accessibility and promoting diversity equity and inclusion across the Communities’ channels
• Working closely with the Senior Communities Manager to use analytics reports and author surveys to identify areas of strength or in need of improvement, communicating these to the relevant internal and external teams
• Sharing regular updates with internal teams on Community activities, development and impact, both through the intranet and wider meetings
• Working with Editorial and Publishing teams to identify and showcase topical and timely areas of research for further promotion through the Communities
• Delivering training and support for internal staff and external contributors
• Regularly providing feedback and guidance to external stakeholders, focusing on best practice for communication and digital engagement to help them share their work most effectively through the Communities

Support the continuation and expansion of visibility of the Communities: Encouraging engagement with, and improving the reach of, content on the Communities platform.

• Contributing to regular reporting and communications on the impact of Research Communities activity for stakeholders at different levels of seniority to raise awareness of Communities activity and initiatives
• Working with the Communities Research Content Manager to maintain a flow of content for the Communities, wider Springer Nature channels and social media to showcase the latest research shared through the Communities
• Supporting the identification, promotion and sharing content on social media
• Leading projects to demonstrate the impact of the Communities for our research and author audiences
• Being a recognized touchpoint for a particular area of the Communities

Key Relationships

• Collaborating with the other Communities Managers focused on different research disciplines
• Building and maintaining a close relationship with the Communities’ external platform team and Springer Nature’s Product and Platform Group
• Liaising with the Research Communities Content Manager to maximize opportunities to showcase the latest research for diverse audiences
• Building strong relationships with editorial and publishing teams of relevant journals to facilitate the showcasing of their authors, editors and research articles through the Communities
• Work closely with the Research Communities Content Manager to identify opportunities to create and commission content for the Communities

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

• Ability to successfully handle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Experience sharing research in accessible and engaging formats with different audiences
• Experience in online communities, blogs, and/or social media, ideally in a scientific or publishing setting
• A demonstrable understanding of the scientific research landscape
• Understanding and experience of working within the publishing industry or allied field (desired)
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Experience of managing projects with cross-departmental stakeholders
• High level of attention to detail
• Confidence in communicating and engaging with stakeholders at various levels of seniority, including researchers, editors, and other partners, in a professional manner
• Knowledge of analytics and reporting tools
• Excellent administrative, organisational and time-management skills
• University degree, preferably in science or a similar qualification, or a similar level qualification or experience. An advanced degree is a plus.
• Experience of building and developing relationships with the research community and academia
• Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and senior researchers
• A passion for making scientific research accessible
• High degree of organisational and time-management skills
• Fluent in business level English
• Excellent presentation skills

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $74,000 - $82,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education and skill level. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
