Description

The Assistant Principal will assist the school principal in overall administration of instructional program and campus level operations. The Assistant Principal will support the school in driving academic and SEL outcomes for students as a key member of the school’s leadership team. Assistant Principals lead instruction, school culture and develop leadership in the school’s emerging leaders.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Model and support implementation of the school's vision and goals
  • Supports the principal in engaging, parents, community regularly to ensure they are invested in the school direction and informed of progress; ensures they are appropriately involved in school decision making
  • Supports development of Principal’s school-wide vision and takes an active role in investing and mobilizing teachers to achieve the collective goals of the school; owns the implementation of select school priorities in support of the school-wide vision
  • Provides input into the school-based strategic planning and identifies what the school’s strategic plan means for his/her own leadership and people that he/she manages
  • With guidance from the Principal, leads the planning and goal setting for the grades/departments that he/she coaches and ensures alignment with school-wide goals
  • Manages diverse opinions, ideologies, and expertise to achieve school vision and objectives
Instructional Leadership
  • Establishes and creates accountability for school-wide expectations
  • Develops own and teacher’s knowledge of best practices in instructional methods and teaches teachers how to match particular strategies to gaps in student mastery
  • Teaches teachers how to assess for both student mastery and growth towards college readiness and insists that assessments are used to inform teacher instruction
  • Leads others who lead department/content/grade-level meetings that focus on planning for and norming on instruction and culture, practicing instructional strategies, and progress monitoring the department/content/grade level
  • Recommends to the Principal what school-wide professional development will be the highest leverage in improving student results; lead engaging, actionable, adult-learning workshops; and hold staff accountable for implementation of the workshop practices
  • Provides high-quality, helpful instructional coaching with frequent and scheduled teacher caseload observations, actionable and bite-sized feedback, and accountability for adjustment in practice
  • Develops a strong understanding of academic standards for all subjects/grades that they lead.
  • Studies curriculum and assessment content and further develops understanding of how assessments map to content mastery, and what is required of students and teachers to accomplish mastery on the assessments
  • Determines how data aligns to end-of-year goals (what is being assessed and how it maps to standards); break-out data to analyze how different student groups are performing; determine what data is saying about areas of student mastery and growth; and identify specific instructional actions and adjustments to fill students’ knowledge and skill gaps and a timeline to do so
  • Ensures excellent teaching via co-observations, norming, and other professional development
Planning and Assessment
  • Lead administration of routine network and state assessments including but not limited to MAP, IReady diagnostic, benchmark testing and Georgia Milestones
  • Uses student achievement data to determine school effectiveness and directs school staff to actively analyze data for improving results
  • Develop and implement testing expectations for teachers and staff to adhere to meet state compliance standards
  • Leads team in analyzing holistic data, instructional and cultural strategies to make appropriate decisions to improve instruction, increase student achievement, increase socio-emotional wellness, and overall school effectiveness
School Climate
  • Supports teachers in understanding process and roles in student support and intervention and develops systems and structures to ensure that limited time is spent on reactive student discipline
  • Maintains collegial environment and supports staff through the stages of the change process
  • Cultivates a positive learning environment by leading with love, joy, and equity
  • On a rotating basis, shares supervision of public/community events with other APs and Principal
  • Consistently models and collaboratively promotes high expectations, mutual respect, concern, and empathy for students, staff, parents, and community
  • Manages parts of the daily school operations (e.g. arrival/dismissal, lunch/recess, school trips)
  • Develops, implements, and monitors best practices in school-wide culture rooted in socio-emotional wellness and restorative practice
  • Utilizes shared decision-making to build relationships with all stakeholders and maintains positive school morale
  • Model strong staff and student culture and manage school-wide social emotional development and behavior management systems
  • Acts as the first Leadership Team contact on student intervention and parent engagement hierarchy; determines next steps for issues that rise above the teacher/grade level/department chair
Organizational Leadership
  • Aligns and coordinates staff to execute the school’s vision for operations, staffing, schedule, testing and finance according to the school’s goals and priorities
  • On a rotating basis, shares supervision of public/community events with other APs and Principal
  • Model and support implementation of all staff code of conduct including: attendance, dress code, handbook and playbook policy and procedures
  • Prioritizes safety students and staff by creating and implementing routines and procedures to ensure a safe, orderly, and positive environment
  • Manages and allocates resources responsibly by adhering to expense priorities
  • Supports the principal in engaging, parents, community regularly to ensure they are invested in the school direction and informed of progress; ensures they are appropriately involved in school decision making
  • Ensures the efficiency of school operations and routine facility maintenance
  • Share supervisory responsibility for professional staff with the school principal
  • Supervise teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, clerical personnel and others as assigned.
Human Resources Leadership
  • Supports the development and execution of a data-driven and performance-based teacher and staff hiring process
  • Ensures high retention rates and engagement of teachers and staff
  • Supports new teacher onboarding processes
  • Supports the Principal in identifying and developing emerging and teacher leaders (Department Heads, Grade Level Chairs, etc.) through goal setting, coaching and providing feedback
Teacher/Staff Evaluation
  • Implement and monitor progress of staff professional improvement plans
  • Properly documents evidence of staff performance
  • Focuses on growth and accountability
  • Retains high-quality staff and properly supports or exits low-performers
  • Regularly conducts observations, provides feedback, and action steps

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education (2.5+ GPA); Master's degree in education or related field preferred
  • Be a United States citizen or otherwise have authorization to work in the United States
  • Have deep knowledge of standards/Common Core shifts and how they relate to curriculum and assessments
  • Ability to pass an Atlanta Public Schools background check and obtain a GaPSC-issued clearance certificate
CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Certification in Educational Leadership by GaPSC preferred
  • Certification in Teaching within Kindergarten to 8th grade by the GaPSC required
WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of 4 years as a lead teacher or instructional coach required
  • Experience raising academic achievement in urban/high needs schools preferred
