Position Title: Assistant Principal, Elementary
Department: Instructional Services Division
Reports To: School Principal
FLSA Status: Exempt
SUMMARY:
Provides assistance to the Principal in the administration of the total school program. Assists the principal in providing leadership in carrying out the goals and objectives of the School District and administering and supervising school programs toward the fullest possible development of each student.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in supervising and coordinating student activity programs.
- Assists the principal in planning developing, and evaluation the educational program of the individual school on a continuous basis in accordance with the students’ needs within the framework of an established policy for the total school’s system.
- Assists in development and maintenance of a philosophy of school discipline.
- Assists in managing building staff, including class schedules and building problems.
- Assists in preparing filed trips and related forms, reports, and procedures.
- Assists the principal with the administration, supervision and evaluation of the school’s total instructional program.
- Serves as administrative head of the school in the absence of the principal.
- Maintains relationship with parents and community.
- Participates in professional learning as scheduled by the principal or district.
- Organizes and prioritizes time to maintain visibility and accessibility on school grounds and/or school events.
- Effectively collaborates with the transportation department to ensure that student are transported to and from school safely.
- Assists in the evaluation of faculty and staff as designated by the principal.
- Assists with coordinating the development of the school schedule and class rosters.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Principal.
- Assists in conducting orientation for new teachers and student interns.
- Assists in managing the business functions of the school relative to purchasing procedures and the monitoring of expenditures.
- Maintains comprehensive, multi-year files for students requiring disciplinary action.
- Assists scheduling special events during the school day.
- Works with students having difficulty in adjustment and behavior.
- Prepares and supervises teacher duty rosters for building, campus and activities as needed.
- Assists in supervising staff attendance and assignment of substitute teachers.
- Assists in the registration of students and related services.
- Administers a program of student discipline and interacts with the students to encourage positive performance.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Master’s Degree; minimum of 3 years of experience in teaching and administration; or equivalent combination of education/experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid South Carolina Certificate in one of the following areas:
- Elementary Principal (Tier I, Tier II)
- Elementary Supervisor
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages and supervises certified and classified employees in the elementary school. Is responsible for assisting with the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of staff. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, instructional manuals, financial reports or governmental regulations. Ability to design and write professional development programs, reports, business correspondences, procedural manuals and data entry procedures. Ability to effectively present professional development and training and respond to questions from groups of trainees and administrators. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, employees and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of assessment data. Ability to apply basic concepts of statistical analysis, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply state and federal regulations to related academic initiatives. Ability to effectively apply knowledge of academic initiatives, programs, and services. Ability to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. The position requires meeting deadlines, and interacting with teachers and administrators. Some extended hours and multiple demands from several people are frequently required of the employee.
Ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Ability to work independently, with limited supervision. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to implement a flexible work schedule to meet the reporting deadlines. Ability to perform duties with a high level of detail and accuracy. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and the school community.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours. Duties of the job require frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment.
