Our diverse list features books, decks, stationery, games, and calendars focused on fiction, narrative nonfiction, food & drink, decorating, health, wellness, and pop culture. We are seeking an assistant editor to support two editors: the Senior Editor for our gift, stationery & non-book products as well as pop culture books, which range from trend-based impulses to coffee table tomes; as well as the Executive Editor for our magical/mystical imprint, Ethos, which publishes books and tarot and oracle decks on topics from mindfulness and meditation to witchcraft, mediumship, and the occult.
This opportunity is perfect for a self-starter with a curiosity in these subject areas who can think critically about what will excite and intrigue readers. The Assistant Editor will help to extend Union Square & Co.’s deep backlist and will help build the frontlist across both categories, including originating new projects, format development, seeking agented opportunities, and reissuing and repackaging previously published titles. The Assistant Editor will have a creative opportunity to pair new books on key subjects in strong-selling categories with innovative and thoughtful packages and designs. Additionally, the Assistant Editor will be responsible for day-to-day tasks such as reading submissions and providing feedback; attending editorial and author/agent meetings as needed; preparing essential paperwork such as contract requests and title information sheets; and tracking important deadlines through the publishing process. The assistant editor will also have the opportunity to acquire new projects with supervision.
An employee in this position can expect a starting rate of $27/hour.
- Providing some administrative support, including calendar management, filing expense reports, tracking deadlines, and scheduling meetings
- Coordinating and creating materials for sales meetings
- Soliciting new projects and developing relationships with agents, in addition to creating concepts for originated projects
- Researching comparative sales data and market trends
- Drafting catalog, jacket, and web copy as well as title information sheets
- Collaborating across all in-house departments (publicity, marketing, sales, production, design, etc.)
- Preparing and trafficking essential paperwork, such as P&Ls and contract requests
- Bachelor's degree required
- Superb organizational skills, as well as an ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
- Creative problem solving, decision making, and time management
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for pop culture, humor, and the gift market, as well as books on spirituality and mysticism
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Strong project management skills, including careful attention to detail and timely follow-up, both internally and externally
- Minimum of 3 years experience in commercial trade book publishing
- Ability to identify consumer trends through analysis of data and research
- Tech savviness and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
