Job Description

About Gretel

Gretel is an independent branding, strategy and design studio based in Brooklyn, NY. We believe that the most interesting work happens at the intersection of opposing forces, old/new, high/low, order/chaos, organic/inorganic. We strive to create clarity of purpose and clarity of communication through insightful strategy and memorable design. We work on a range of strategy, design and identity projects for local, national and global clients like Nike, The New York Times, Restaurant Noma, The Museum of Modern Art, MasterClass, Netflix, Knoll and Japan’s biggest publisher, Kodansha.

About The Role

Your primary role as a designer is to generate unique, insightful concepts and translate them into striking design solutions that can adapt to a variety of executions. You can balance and evoke different tones and explore a range of visual concepts in your design work. You’re comfortable designing individual brand elements and building extended visual languages and design systems. You’ll work within a project team to conceive, communicate and deliver best-in-class creative solutions against project briefs.

Day-to-day you will:

  • Sketch and explore individual brand elements: logos, typography, iconography, color palettes and graphic elements
  • Coordinate with the project management team to ensure the work meets our objectives and timeline
  • Explore how these elements come to life in dynamic visual systems across different applications
  • Work with the motion design team to explore motion and interaction behavior
  • Craft written treatments that articulate your design decisions and rationale
  • Define art direction, photography and illustration
  • Work with Junior Designers and interns to improve their work and skills
  • Take an active part in client meetings, workshops and presentations
  • Work with the Creative or Design Director to elevate the craft and refine design expression
  • Help shape and design client presentations
  • Ideate creative concepts informed by strategy and project brief

Ideal candidates are:

  • Knowledgeable about design history: studios, photographers, typographers & movements
  • Detail-oriented
  • An effective manager of your time
  • Informed and interested in current design thinking and the state of our industry
  • Equally skilled in creative thinking and design technique
  • Collaborative and open-minded

Benefits + Perks:

  • Paid parental leave
  • Opt-in participation to our external mentorship initiatives via our involvement with Diversity in Design and our ongoing partnership with New Design High School
  • Premiums with no additional cost to staff
  • Health care coverage: for baseline Aetna medical, dental, and vision plans, Gretel covers
  • Hybrid model (3 fixed days in office, 2 remote) 20 of your typically fixed days can be changed to remote each year
  • 5 Refresh days (can be used for mental & emotional wellbeing)
  • 20 Remote August days (much of the studio works off-site, even internationally)
  • 20 days PTO (vacation/personal, sick days don’t count)
  • 401k plan
  • Internal mentorship and coaching both from E-level and to junior creative staff
  • On-site and off-site creative workshops, guest speakers, team outings and other opportunities to connect
  • Weekly Remote Friday Breakfast compliments of Gretel via Seamless
  • 23 office bank/holiday closings (includes 2 week December holiday)
  • Monthly fitness credit
  • Relocation stipend on a per-case basis
