Assistant Production Editor Jobs

THE OPPORTUNITY

Oversees production of 80–90 illustrated book and book-plus (novelty) titles per year, and also ebook editions when relevant under direction of Associate Production Director. Will work on licensed titles based on leading children’s properties and brands, such as Nickelodeon and Disney. Responsible for communicating project schedules and tracking milestones. Checks for quality assurance of cover, text, illustrations, and photos, in all stages from manuscript to finished files. Responsible for assigning and assessing freelance copyediting, proofreading, and fact-checking as needed.

Responsibilities

• Confirms and communicates project schedule to teams
• Carefully review materials (manuscripts, art, covers, prototypes) and traffic them through in-house editorial and design departments
• Maintain accurate progress reports and lead status meetings
• Handles book production from copyedit through finished product, including eBooks
• Track progress in database and create status reports
• Review and traffic copyedit and interior passes (assess freelancer work as needed)
• Work with Associate Production Director to accommodate crash schedules
• Work closely with creative, editorial, and manufacturing departments on all aspects of a book or product
• Closely monitor all details of novelty products such as appropriate safety labeling
• Follow up with team on upcoming deadlines
• Keep property/series style sheet updated and enforce house style

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Strong knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation
• Excellent copyediting and proofreading and organizational skills
• Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining high standards of quality and juggling multiple projects
• Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style
• Strong computer skills
• Personable and professional demeanor with strong written and verbal communication skills

Experience and Education:

Experience: 1-3 years of entry-level experience in book publishing, or equivalent in a related media; children’s media experience and a good sense of humor a plus
