Kokila is seeking an Editorial Assistant or Assistant Editor (commensurate with experience) to provide administrative and editorial support to the Publisher and Executive Editor, along with other departmental needs.

The Essentials:


We are looking for an Editorial Assistant or Assistant Editor to help our team expand its impact. You will report to the Publisher and Executive Editor to provide administrative and editorial support, all while coordinating with various departments in the division, agents, authors, and illustrators. In doing so, you’ll need to be comfortable with a rapidly changing agenda and your ability to prioritize and maintain attention to detail will be key.


With this in mind, to be successful in this role we feel that you’ll need to have:


  • Evidenced ability to manage communication and workflow in a proactive manner
  • An interest in the current children’s literature market
  • Great organizational skills to navigate a high-volume environment
  • Strong ability to manage competing and changing priorities
  • Clear and effective communications skills, especially as you liaise remotely across multiple teams
  • Strong ability to prioritize your work and calendar independently


Responsibilities and duties:
  • Keep track of Kokila reviews and awards
  • File Publisher’s expenses
  • Prepare departmental PowerPoint presentations
  • Schedule recurring departmental meetings
  • Research competitor titles across various platforms and current trends
  • Assist with managing imprint Instagram and Twitter accounts, which includes post scheduling and writing copy
  • Coordinate and send out Kokila creator newsletter
  • Manage the Publisher’s calendar
  • Help review projects submitted to Kokila through PYR’s Emerging Voices program, which adds inclusivity to our submission process
  • Support with billing and contracts
  • Serve as the administrative liaison for the imprint when interfacing with other departments
  • Mail author copies
  • Draft descriptive text about our books, including selling copy
  • Serve as liaison on behalf of the Publisher with other departments or individuals to set up meetings, share requested materials, and print materials for meetings
  • Register books with Library of Congress
  • Update and maintain department contacts information
  • Update online metadata
  • Editorial support, including review of routing passes
  • Support the department with daily administrative and clerical tasks, such as:

Salary for this position is $48,000 for the Editorial Assistant level and $53,000 for the Assistant Editor level. The Assistant Editor level will be considered with at least two years’ experience at a major book publisher. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
