About Us
Harlem Grown’s mission is to inspire youth to live healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition.

Harlem Grown operates 13 urban agricultural sites featuring 5 soil-based urban farms, 4 school gardens, 3 hydroponic greenhouses, and a mushroom chamber. All of our sites are located between 122 and 152 Streets in Central Harlem, Manhattan.

Since 2021, our programming has served over 11,000 youth in Harlem, we've produced and distributed over 100,000 servings of food, and diverted over 50,000 pounds of food scraps into local compost operations.

Our Programs
Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability through the lens of racial justice, food justice, social justice, and equity. Our youth focused programs include intensive school partnerships, educational farm tours, a summer camp, a Saturday enrichment program, monthly community events, an afterschool program, and our Mobile Teaching Kitchen. Our community development programs open to all ages include wellness workshops, special events, food scrap collection for composting, and fresh produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents.

Job Overview:
The VP of Programs is responsible for the planning, implementation, management, and evaluation of current and future program offerings at Harlem Grown. The VP of Programs plays a key role in developing and implementing strategic long-term goals and objectives for the programs to achieve the mission of Harlem Grown. The VP of Programs will also establish monitoring and evaluation procedures to assess impact and effectiveness of the program offerings. This position requires a passionate commitment to Harlem Grown’s mission and to working with youth, as well as a strong knowledge of program development and program management in the nonprofit industry.

Responsibilities:
  • Set the strategic vision for Harlem Grown’s 7 streams of programming and any new offerings including staffing structure, schedules, OKRs/KPIs, and budget.
  • Assist with Harlem Grown marketing and outreach efforts.
  • Drive enhanced program quaility, using data informed practices to ensure programatic offerings are producing mission driven results
  • Participate In Executive meetings and retreats, helping guide Harlem Grown’s strategic vision.
  • Drive robust professional development plan to ensure growth opportunities and pathways for staff to learn in grow through the department.
  • Work as a team member to support Harlem Grown initiatives and programs
  • Oversee Director of Partnerships who cultivates and manage relationships with partner organizations and community groups
  • Closely manage the collaboration between direct educational service teams and the agriculture teams to ensure that each team’s work supports the others.
  • Oversee curriculum development and alignment of all programs, including in class, out of school time, and on site farm education
  • Manage Director and Manager-level program staff, coaching them in effective leadership of their teams.
  • Serve as a role model for youth and reinforce Harlem Grown’s values
  • Set the tone for the Program Team’s culture, balancing accountability, support, and joy.
  • Create and monitor budgets for all programs; ensure programs operate within approved budget; monitor and approve all budgeted program expenditures. Own grant spending and coding within non-personnel program expenses.
  • Work closely with operational staff to develop and implement a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths and effectiveness of each program, to identify areas for improvement, and hold the Program team accountable to data practices.
  • Develop new programs as needed and aligned to the strategic vision to meet the needs of Harlem Grown and the community.
  • Ensure legal compliance of all programs to federal, state, and local guidelines and professional standards.
  • Collaborate with the Development team, providing budgets for grant submissions and impact data and narrative for grant reports.
  • Work closely with th C-Team to generate project proposals and impact reports, and meet with potential long-term partners.

Qualifications:
  • Experience in racial/social justice work with youth, a plus
  • Flexibility to work various hours including early mornings, nights or weekends
  • Excellent organizational, communication, people and project management skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Gardening or farming experience, and knowledge of organic and sustainable practices, a plus
  • 5+ years of experience in youth and family program development and management
  • Strong understanding of data best practices and analysis
  • 8+ years of management experience at a Director-level or higher
  • Masters Degree in Education, Non-Profit Management, or related field preferred;
  • Spanish language fluency, a plus.
