Job Description
Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world’s deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. These values are grounded in and expressed through the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems. Fred Hutch is in pursuit of becoming an anti-racist organization. We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, anti-racism and inclusion.

We are seeking an enthusiastic Staff Scientist position to join Dr. Heather Greenlee, N.D., Ph.D., M.P.H. in the Public Health Sciences Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch). Dr. Greenlee’s research program uses both clinical trials and observational studies to examine a broad range of lifestyle intervention and complementary/integrative therapies for cancer prevention and control, especially in under-resourced and vulnerable populations. The Staff Scientist will collaborate closely with the Fred Hutch Integrative Medicine Program. The mission of the Integrative Medicine Program is to provide effective, interdisciplinary, evidence-based complementary and integrative therapies in collaboration with conventional oncology care, and to conduct cutting-edge research on promising therapies.

Fred Hutch is an independent, nonprofit research institute based in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle and houses the nation’s first and largest Cancer Prevention research program. Fred Hutch, in collaboration with its clinical and research partners, the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital, is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center in the Pacific Northwest. Fred Hutch is also home to several other major coordinating centers including the statistical center for SWOG, an adult cooperative oncology group, the data coordinating center for NCI’s Early Detection Research Network and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network and for the COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN) testing vaccines for SARS-CoV-2.

Responsibilities

Candidates should have an interest in the investigation of novel, interdisciplinary research questions related to identifying, testing and implementing effective lifestyle intervention and integrative oncology clinical protocols. The Staff Scientist will work under the direction of Dr. Heather Greenlee, Associate Member of the Fred Hutch Division of Public Health Sciences and Director of the Integrative Medicine Program at Fred Hutch. Dr. Greenlee’s research program uses both clinical trials and observational studies to examine a broad range of complementary/integrative therapies to improve cancer survivorship, symptom management, and cancer outcomes. Studies will include single institution and multi-site trials, including local and national clinical trials consortia, as well as observational cohorts. Specific research areas of interest include lifestyle modifications, acupuncture, acupressure, and the appropriate use of dietary supplements.

Responsibilities Include

  • Analyzing data and manuscript preparation
  • Grant writing
  • Managing study staff
  • Developing and implementing research protocols

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Successful track record of manuscript publication
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience implementing clinical trials and/or observational studies in acupuncture and/or acupressure
  • PhD or doctoral equivalent in Epidemiology, Health Outcomes Research, Behavioral Science, or clinical integrative medicine

This position is patient facing and/or requires access to Fred Hutch clinical facilities. As such, full COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment, without exception. Booster doses are strongly recommended but not required. If declining a booster, completion of the COVID-19 Vaccination Status Form Questionnaire and COVID-19 Booster Declination Training is required. Because of our immunocompromised patient population, there are no medical or religious accommodations available for any employee who is patient facing and/or requires access to Fred Hutch clinical facilities. Only employees whose positions are fully remote, who are not patient facing and/or require no access to clinical facilities, may apply for medical or religious accommodations. As a condition of employment, newly hired employees must provide proof of vaccination before their first day of employment.

A statement describing your commitment and contributions toward greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in your career or that will be made through your work at Fred Hutch is requested of all finalists.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $65,484 to $165,440 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
