The Department of Bioengineering has 2 openings for Research Scientist/ Engineer 1.
Many human diseases can be diagnosed by biochemical analysis of blood, saliva, urine, or other fluids. Our group creates new tests to diagnose disease by engineering assay chemistries and devices, with an emphasis on nucleic acid assays (DNA and RNA). We aim to make easy-to-use tests for global health settings or non-laboratory settings in high-income locations. The group is actively involved in entrepreneurship, industry collaboration, and translation for global health settings.
This RSE 1 position supports ongoing research in the Lutz Lab in the Department of Bioengineering.
RESPONSIBILITIES
60% Research Activities
  • Create complex testing kit assembly. This includes strong adherence to lab safety and protocol regarding work are cleanliness and elimination of contamination possibilities as well as strong adherence to labeling and sealing guidance.

  • Run lab experiments as required for the further development of the product or the manufacturability of the product.

  • Oversight of an outsourced lab for various portions of the production such as lyophilization. Oversight would include insurance of protocol adherence and acceptability of final product.

  • 20% Research Reporting
  • Present at UW events (journal clubs, lab meetings etc.).

  • Summarizes data/results in narrative or graphic form for inclusion in proposals and progress reports.

  • Attends and participates in lab meetings and share updates and information with the group.

  • Present research results at lab meetings and provides summaries to PI.

  • 20% Lab/Facility Operations Support
  • Notify the lab manager when new supplies or materials are needed to replenish the inventory.

  • Follows standard operating protocols and performs assigned tasks in a manner that is safe for self and others in the lab.

  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Bioengineering, Biology, Chemistry, or Biochemistry.

  • 3-12 months of relevant experience.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    DESIRED
  • Experience with general lab maintenance and safety protocols.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Highly organized with a strong attention to detail.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and work independently.

  • Excellent recording keeping skills.

  • Strong analytical, written and presentation skills.

  • Capable of multi-tasking and managing multiple priorities.
