The Team

The goals of The Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM) Enteric & Diarrheal Diseases and Environmental Surveillance (EDD+ES) Team are to enable and support informative and efficient environmental surveillance systems lower and middle income settings, and use these data to support optimized disease control and elimination strategies for enteric and diarrheal diseases. The necessary environmental component for both wastewater surveillance and enteric disease transmission unify these initiatives and highlight the transmission mechanism focus of all aspects of this work

Your Role

The Senior Research Scientist will maintain existing and pursue new initiatives in the enterics and diarrheal disease research landscape at IDM, which includes using mechanistic, dynamic modeling to answer questions around inference from surveillance data, scoping impact of novel vaccines, assessing and comparing the impact of currently implemented vaccines, accounting for uncertainty due to environmental changes, and scoping alternative control options.

What You’ll Do

  • Publish work in the scientific community
  • Calibrate dynamic models to location-specific data
  • Develop new disease transmission models or model features as needed, identify and utilize existing models where appropriate
  • Conduct exploratory data analyses to identify research questions and knowledge gaps for existing and new disease areas including typhoid fever, cholera and shigella
  • Utilize a surveillance-based lens in modeling efforts to link with environmental surveillance and other rapid diagnostic technologies in development
  • Technical lead for dynamic modeling of enteric and diarrheal diseases within the EDD+ES team
  • Interface with BMGF counterparts to ensure strategic impact of work
  • Utilize dynamic modeling approaches to answer questions related to vaccine impact, environmental changes, and knowledge gaps that link into strategic decision-making

Your Experience

  • Desire to translate complex work and outcomes to concise policy recommendations
  • Ability to apply structure to simplify complex problems
  • 5+ years' post-degree experience working in quantitative analysis, disease modeling, and model calibration
  • Curiosity around and tolerance for ambiguity
  • Strong skills in scientific communication through conference presentations and multiple peer-reviewed publications
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working in enteric and diarrheal disease epidemiology and surveillance
  • Excellence in at least one data-analysis or scripting language
  • PhD or equivalent experience required in quantitative epidemiology disease modeling, or related field

The typical salary range for this role is $140,553 to $261,027 USD. The exact offer will be determined by a variety of factors such as the candidate’s individual skills, qualifications, and experience relative to the requirements of the role.
