Job Description

This position is located in the Arabic Verbatim Reporting Section, Verbatim Reporting Service, Meetings and Publishing Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) in New York. The Verbatim Reporting Service prepares and processes the verbatim records of the meetings of the General Assembly, the Security Council and other bodies entitled to them. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Arabic Verbatim Reporting Section.

Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Senior Reviser/Verbatim Reporter, Arabic Verbatim Reporting will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Revises in extenso verbatim records of meetings dealing with subjects of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Translates/transcribes texts of an exceptionally sensitive, complex or technical nature, as required.
  • Reports to Chief of Section on the quality of the work of on-site and off-site Verbatim Revisers and Reporters and assists him/her in monitoring the quality of in-house and contractual translations.
  • Trains junior Verbatim staff and provides feedback, advice and coaching to on-site and off-site Verbatim Reporters and Revisers as required.
  • Ensures conformity of the revised verbatim record with the original and/or other language versions and with the United Nations established practice. Reviews the final compiled revised record for quality control.
  • Serves as deputy to the Chief of Section and acts as officer-in-charge in the Chief’s absence.
  • Helps manage terminological research within the Section and assists the Chief of Section in the preparation of terminology materials to meet the needs of the section.
  • Assists in reviewing the original text transcribed and edited from interpretation against the text of delivery in the original language, as required.
  • Assists the Chief of Section in selecting texts for United Nations competitive examinations, in marking candidates’ scripts and in evaluating results, as required.
  • Assists the Chief of Section with work programming for the Section and with the preparation of instructions.

Education

A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required.
Candidates for this position must have passed the relevant United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors in Arabic or relevant United Nations language competitive examinations in Arabic held before 2017.

Job - Specific Qualification

Passing the relevant combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Arabic Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors or relevant United Nations language competitive examinations held before 2017, is required.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten years of experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, copy preparing, proofreading, production editing or verbatim reporting and revision of verbatim records is required.
Experience in verbatim reporting and revision of verbatim records is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in Arabic, which must be the candidate’s main language, fluency in English, and knowledge of one other UN official language are required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
