Position Summary
The Rehearsal Director/Second Company Director (CB2) is a member of the Artistic leadership team, reporting directly to the Artistic Director. This highly visible role is responsible for the implementation of the Artistic Vision of the Company and the Second Company in the preparation and delivery of all performances. This unique role will have oversite to the development of all levels of dancers while maintaining Cincinnati Ballet’s artistic integrity and ensuring a safe and inclusive working environment. The Rehearsal Director/CB2 will work on establishing advanced training offerings and performance opportunities for CB2 dancers while stewarding their career development with a focus on professional placement at the completion of their training. The Rehearsal Director/CB2 will be an ambassador and spokesperson for the CB2 program and will ensure artistic objectives are met.
Interaction
The Rehearsal Director/CB2 is a public-facing position with a high degree of interactivity with dancers, choreographers, and stagers. This position interacts extensively with the entire Artistic, Production, and Academy + Education department as well as. They may also collaborate with Marketing, Development, and Administration on occasion.

Operates as a key member of the team that is deeply invested in the artistic caliber of the organization. Demonstrates diplomacy and tact. Has a strong grasp of what constitutes appropriate and inclusive language when working with diverse individuals. Develops effective working relationships at all levels and values these relationships as critical to effective work.
Dependability/Punctuality
The Rehearsal Director/CB2 must be highly dependable in fulfilling all rehearsal classes, meetings, and follow-up communication. Punctuality and preparedness are essential responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Effectively communicate the rehearsal requirements to dancers and lead rehearsals through demonstration.
- Work with the Artistic Director and other Artistic Staff to assist in scheduling.
- Assist with the effective management of the dancers so that a high level of professional excellence and morale is maintained.
- Assist Artistic Director in overseeing all audition organization and management including traveling outside of the state.
- In collaboration with the Artistic Director, provide timely dancer assessments.
- Rehearse and maintain standards of existing repertoire, maximizing dancers’ technical and artistic capability, and in the absence of the original choreographer or producer, be fully aware of the choreographer’s artistic intentions in learning the work.
- Ensure the Artist’s Expectations are implemented and respected in rehearsals by choreographers, répétiteurs, guest teachers, and dancers.
- On occasion, stage or choreograph for the Company or CB2 programming.
- Work closely with the Production Team and the Company Manager to ensure dancers are prepared for performances.
- Attend and monitor all performances to ensure that artistic and professional excellence is maintained.
- Responsible for the development and maintenance of the CB2 program in alignment with Cincinnati Ballet’s artistic vision. Including the administration of the program, educational assessment standards for recruitment, onboarding, and care for the “whole” CB2 dancer.
- Support the maintenance of dancers’ technique by providing classes and warm-ups at an outstanding level and delivering individual and remedial coaching as necessary to all ranks of artists.
- Commit to maintaining effective teamwork within the studio, exampling genuine collaboration.
- Participate in the provision of a safe working environment, adhering to the Company’s policies at all times.
- Assist in the staging of new work, recording, and documenting changes in choreography as required.
- Maintain a deep commitment to Cincinnati Ballet’s principles of Identity, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IIDEA) through programming and relationships that prioritize inclusion and belonging, welcome and celebrate cultural differences and all socioeconomic backgrounds, and provide a safe space for expression for all participants.
- Support Cincinnati Ballet’s Summer Program, by teaching and coaching Professional Training Division (PTD) students.
- In collaboration with the Artistic Team, monitor stage rehearsals to ensure that all choreography is accurately reproduced.
- Provide feedback and coaching to all dancers in an effort to improve the level of performance.
KEY PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
- Desire to learn and grow in rehearsal practices and leadership development.
- Proven ability to work sensitively and effectively with people from a variety of different ethnic, socio-economic, educational, religious, sexual orientation, gender diverse, and generational backgrounds.
- In-depth knowledge of classical and contemporary ballet and experience coaching professional dancers.
- Effective administrator with a collaborative spirit, strong attention to detail, and excellent organizational skills.
- Professional dance experience required.
- Nurturing demeanor with the ability to exercise authority and discipline when necessary.
- Clear and compassionate communicator.
- Proficient in modern technologies including but not limited to MS Office and Zoom.
- Strong experience in staging. Choreographic experience is appreciated.
- 3-5 years’ experience working as a Rehearsal Director/Second Company Director or a stager or hybrid of experience in these areas.
- Highly experienced teacher.

EXPECTED WORK HOURS AND TRAVEL:
- Must be able to work a highly flexible schedule which may include weekday and/or weekend hours between 9 am and 6:00 pm. Most hours are scheduled in advance, but weekly flexibility is required. Hours change seasonally.
