job Summary and Duties


The Learning Environments Support Specialist is responsible for supporting classroom and computer lab infrastructure and technologies at the university. In this role, they manage and support various classroom technologies including AV control and display systems, plan, organize, and coordinate daily computer lab operations for student use, and assist as needed in the implementation and integration of current and emerging technologies in support of teaching, learning and research.
As a member of the IT Solutions team, the Learning Environments Support Specialist is expected to uphold the division's mission to "empower an agile, digital university and elevate technology as a strategic institutional asset" and contribute positively to a collaborative, human-centered, innovative, accountable, transparent, and inclusive culture within ITS.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to: Associate Director, Educational & Research Technologies
Supervises: No supervisory responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but not limited to the following:
Classroom and Lab Support (75%)
  • Provides support for all of the university¿s core classroom and computer lab technology services, including discipline specific instructional technology.
  • Provides consulting to faculty on best practice uses of classroom and computer lab technologies to promote effective teaching and learning.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves computer classroom, classroom lab, and classroom related support issues.
  • Implements and assesses classroom and computer lab technologies.
  • Tests and troubleshoots audio and video conference/classroom control and monitoring operations.
  • Promotes the use of classroom and lab technologies to enhance teaching and learning through workshops, learning communities, webinars, and other opportunities.
Academic Technology Support (15%)
  • Provides support as needed for academic technology-related issues, problems and requests.
  • Assists as needed in providing faculty, staff, and students with software and hardware training/instruction on academic technology.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Participation & Support (10%)
  • Represents IT Solutions and participates in the campus community by serving on working groups, project teams, and university committees.
  • Maintains awareness of current practices and future trends in learning environments technology and best practices.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - The following are essential:
  • Understanding of AV control systems and video conferencing/recording systems.
  • Ability to build effective relationships and strong commitment to working collegially and collaboratively with constituents at all levels in a diverse and distributed environment.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment, including related university software and email.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills (including ability to present ideas in user-friendly, business-friendly and technical language) and interpersonal skills with a focus on rapport-building, listening and questioning skills.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, including ability to anticipate, identify, and solve critical problems.
  • Experience supporting instructional technology in a classroom and/or lab environment.
Additional/Desirable Skills & Abilities
  • Experience providing instructional technology support to teaching professionals and/or students.
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Exposure to computer-aided simulation technology.
  • Demonstrated proficiency developing and delivering training and effective support materials.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
All employees are responsible for maintaining an environment that is free from discrimination, intimidation, harassment, including sexual harassment. Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment.
This position works from an office but may also be on construction job sites, with the various conditions associated with that work.
Hazards include a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals.

Employees must report any unsafe work conditions or practices, as well as any near-miss incidents, to their supervisor and Risk Management. Supervisors and employees should ensure that injury/accident reports are submitted to the Office of Human Resources and Risk Management within 24 hours of the incident.


Education


High school diploma or equivalent required.


Experience


Three years of relevant experience in classroom and/or computer lab technology. Additional job-related education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
