Job Description
Facilities Services is charged with the maintenance and operations of all university buildings, grounds, and infrastructure systems. Facilities comprised of the four service management areas of Environmental Services, Campus Maintenance, Engineering and Utilities, and General Operations, as well as the Business Management and Administrative areas necessary to support the Facilities operation. The Campus Maintenance section of Facilities Services is responsible for operations, maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction of buildings, grounds, equipment, and utilities for all university departments.
Under general supervision of the Campus Maintenance Manager, the Laborer is responsible for a variety of technical and manual work supporting the operations, maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction of buildings, grounds, streets, walkways, equipment, and utilities for Montana State University.
Duties and Responsibilities
Perform support work and provide assistance to other trades (plumbers, electricians, painters, carpenters, etc.) including site preparation, delivery of supplies, materials and equipment, and site cleanup.
Perform and assist with a variety of skilled technical work (e.g. masonry, asbestos abatement and mold remediation, demolition, concrete, construction site preparation, etc.).
Operate a variety of equipment including manual, power, and heavy equipment (e.g. bucket truck, fork lift, Grad-All, loaders, dump truck, roll-off trucks, snow removal equipment, pressure washers, chainsaws, etc.) to perform campus operational, renovation, construction, and maintenance work.
Operates vehicles and specialized equipment, such as trucks, GradAll, forklift, snow removal equipment, Roll off trucks, loaders, backhoes, and mowers in support of renovation, construction, repair, and maintenance of campus buildings, streets, and grounds.
Inspect, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on roof membranes and roof drainage systems to prevent damage from water and weather exposure.
Institute necessary steps to confine hazards and/or protect building occupants when suspected hazardous materials are encountered on any maintenance, alteration, repair or renovation job in progress including abating small areas of asbestos or mold containing materials using established removal policies and procedures.
Perform and assist with snow removal operations, waste management operations (landfill, recycling, e-waste), stormwater compliance operations.
Support large campus activities like sports, concerts, and other significant University events.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
High school graduation or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Progressively responsible experience in general construction laborer experience that includes facility maintenance and construction equipment operation, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Demonstrated experience operating heavy equipment such as fork lifts, trucks, bucket trucks, etc and using power tools.
Demonstrated experience using general construction equipment and hand tools including masonry tools, ladders, scaffolds, chainsaws, etc.
Demonstrated experience providing a high level of customer service in a fast paced environment, continuously displaying a positive, professional and helpful manner.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Possess a valid asbestos/mold removal certification. If successful candidate does not currently possess an asbestos/mold certification, it must be obtained within one year of hire.
Successful experience with the maintenance and repair of single ply roofing systems.
Working knowledge of OSHA laws and regulations, and asbestos and mold abatement methods and procedures.
Experience operating snow removal machinery.
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B, Type II).

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points). Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.
Must possess a valid asbestos/mold removal certification within one year of hire.

Physical Demands
This position requires the ability to: position self to stoop, bend, and crawl; ascend and descend scaffolds, stairs, roofs, and ladders; and traverse long distances.
Position requires the transport of heavy materials and equipment.
Work areas include roofs, poles, manholes, overhead hatches and other difficult access locations. Working conditions include but are not limited to: exposure to temperature extremes and inclement weather; working in/around fumes, dust, noise, and research-related activities; and working around equipment, machinery, and site conditions typical of a construction environment.
