Schnable Lab at Iowa State University is hiring a Lab Manager (classified as a Research Scientist III) who will be responsible for the operation of a maize genomics and genetics research lab, the Genomic Technologies Facility (GTF), and the general operation of the Plant Sciences Institute building (Roy J. Carver co-Lab, CCL). This role entails leading complex internal and external research projects, collaborating with interdisciplinary partners, and overseeing manuscript submissions. They will support summer field operations with the Nursery Manager and manage Schnable Lab, GTF operations, and daily CCL operations, including staffing, maintenance, tours, and tenant service.
This is a one year, regular with term appointment (fixed term) position with the opportunity for renewal.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with Nursery Manager in the lab, aiding summer field operations through tasks in wet lab, field experiments, and high-throughput genotyping/phenotyping.
- Works with both on- and off-campus interdisciplinary partners for research projects, and oversees manuscript and proposal submission.
- Manages Schnable Lab operations, ensuring guideline adherence. Trains staff in techniques and equipment use and maintains safety training. Supervises undergraduates and potentially 1-2 staff, ensuring smooth operations.
- Manages daily operations at CCL, including staffing, coordinating maintenance of facilities and equipment, conducting building tours, and offering customer service to incubator tenants.
- Manages daily GTF operations, encompassing inquiries, scheduling, servicing, training, equipment maintenance, supply management, billing, and annual fee assessment.
- Leads intricate internal and external research projects, encompassing development, design, and execution. Oversees progress, assesses outcomes, and readies presentations and manuscripts.
Level Guidelines
- Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
- May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
- Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
- Provides guidance to students
- Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
- Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals
- Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
- May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
