Introduction
Join our team as a Human Resources (HR) Assistant (entry or advanced level) within the Division of Personnel Management. We are looking for a talented individual to assist with Human Resource for employees working at Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center (SRSTC) located in Mauston, WI. This is one of seven facilities managed by the Department of Health Services (DHS).
This full-time position will be headquartered at SRSTC in Mauston and may work remotely 2-3 days per week after the training period. We offer a team-oriented atmosphere with daytime working hours, Monday - Friday. The schedule may vary based on training and operational needs.

Position Summary
The HR Assistant is responsible for performing various human resources duties, primarily focusing on coordinating recruitment and staffing activities and administering State and Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (WFMLA/FMLA). Duties include:
- Providing consultation to SRSTC supervisors on recruitment and staffing activities while ensuring compliance with Wisconsin Human Resources Handbook and DHS policies and procedures.
- Processing new hires and other personnel transactions and maintaining personnel files using the Human Resources Information System (HRIS), PeopleSoft.
- Processing FMLA and medical verification requests which includes determining eligibility, reviewing medical documentation, and processing entries in Peoplesoft.
- Serving as the primary point of contact for employees requesting to use FMLA and educating them on FMLA rights and processes.
- Serving as contact for communication to the public regarding SRSTC employment.
Salary Information
- Pay for current or former state employees is set based upon the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction.
- The starting pay is between $22.56 and $28.12 per hour, plus excellent benefits. The position will be filled at either the Human Resources Assistant (pay schedule and range 81/05) or Human Resources Assistant – Advanced (pay schedule and range 81/04) level. The level of the position and salary will be determined based on the qualifications of the selected candidate at the time of hire.
- A 12-month probationary period is required.
Job Details
- DHS does not sponsor work visas for this position, thus, in compliance with federal law, selected candidates will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.
- All staff at SRSTC will be required to receive a TB test, which will be administered by medical personnel approved by the facility prior to their start date. All state employees are required to report their COVID vaccination status, whether they are vaccinated or not, and must provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information within their first week of employment.
- All applicants who may be appointed to this position will be required to allow DHS to conduct a background check to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled.
Qualifications
Minimally qualified applicants will have both of the following:
- Experience working in an office setting providing administrative support (e.g., scheduling interviews or meetings, drafting documents, reviewing documentation to ensure accuracy and completion, responding to emails, etc.).
- Experience using Microsoft Office Products including MS Word and Excel for tasks such as document creation, data entry, report production, data analysis, etc.
Well-qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following:
- Experience performing HR activities within an HR office setting (e.g., recruitment and selection activities, onboarding new employees, maintaining personnel files, using an HRIS system to process personnel transactions or payroll, etc.).
- Experience administering FMLA and/or Worker Compensation.
- Formal education or training in HR (e.g., coursework, certifications, etc.).
