The Director, Human Resources (HR), Employee Relations focus, will report to the Sr. Vice President of Human Resources with a dotted line to the Sr. Director, Enterprise Services and is responsible for the overall administration, delivery and evaluation of a human resource function, focusing on the day to day Employee Relations needs of Enterprise Services and ERAP (the clinical functions across our hospitals comprised of Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Anesthesia, Pathology (not including nurses or union staff). This role supports the delivery of HR strategy, policies and procedures in line with the organization’s strategic plan. Oversees a team of Human Resources Business Partners with a focus on local employee relations, who work closely with leaders in ES and ERAP. Focus includes enhancement of positive employee relations through employee engagement, workforce management, diversity and inclusion, communications, change management, integrating the core values of the organization into the culture, assessing the need and establishing the delivery of effective training and development programs for managers and staff, implementing equitable and competitive salary and benefits’ structures, and ensuring that all employment practices are consistently interpreted by all managers in accordance with federal and state law and human resource policies.

The Director supports strategic business goals by working with leaders and partnering with strategic HR partners to identify team effectiveness opportunities, configuration and training/upskilling needs, establishing department accountabilities, developing policy and directing and coordinating human resources activities, which may include components of employee engagement, compensation, and training. The main area of focus will be performance management, disciplinary matters, reduction in force, unemployment, and guidance to managers on employee relations matters.

1. Develop relationships with senior leadership and support HRBPs in understanding corporate-wide business needs and goals and developing strategic workforce initiatives, training/learning strategy, programs and performance improvement solutions.

2. Lead HRBPs in solving strategic challenges through an organization development lens. Lead HRBPs in providing support for change initiatives across the central departments and in conducting interventions to improve the performance of the business. With the input and recommendations of the HRBPs, develop standardized approaches to support departmental/organizational restructuring, centralization, consolidation or process redesign.

3. Develop close working relationships with HR COE leaders and colleagues, including Compensation, Executive Compensation, Talent Acquisition, Talent Management, Benefits and Operations. Work collaboratively with these groups to recommend and implement process improvements and standardization to maximize effectiveness of all groups. Provide feedback and input into development of wage and salary programs, bonus programs, benefits design, leave and related policies, and works in partnership with these groups to support managers and the workforce.

4. Work closely with HRBPs and leaders to create scalable and replicable retention and development programs for key staff. Implement talent management programs in collaboration with the business leaders and HR Business Partners.

5. Supervise and provide mentoring, coaching and support to HRBPs, HR Specialists, and other positions as assigned. Review, enhance and implement development plans for each of the assigned HRBPs, in coordination with Senior HR leadership and Training and Development. Assess progress and update plans annually or more frequently.

6. Foster a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism support through partnerships with the DE&I Office.

7. Contribute to the development of people strategies that support business strategies and objectives, and help to drive business and organizational performance. Support and influence key operational and strategic decisions.

8. Leverage human capital expertise to advise and support HRBPs in collaborating with business units in sustaining employee engagement action plans.

9. Support managers by providing legally based human resources advice and counsel and guiding them through the decision process.

10. Propose, develop/outsource and launch employee engagement initiatives for Mass General Brigham Central employees to enhance the culture of the organization.

11. Support HRBPs by improving communication and coordination across the groups to provide a lens into corporate-wide initiatives. Highlight broader impacts of specific projects and establish new approaches and innovation approaches to supporting business leaders.

12. Provide expertise and input into the development of HR metrics dashboards, monitor HR metrics and work with leaders and HRBPs to incorporate metrics in the strategic planning conversations with managers.

13. Execute and regularly reviews organization’s policies, procedures and practices on human resources matters. Communicates changes in the organization’s human resources policies and procedures and ensures that proper compliance is followed.

14. Maintain knowledge of industry trends and federal and/or state employment legislation and responsibility of organization’s compliance.

15. Oversee the analysis, maintenance, and communication of records required by law or local governing bodies, or other departments in the organization.

16. Represent MGB Central Human Resources in system-wide meetings, activities and committees.

17. Perform related duties as required.


Requires Bachelor’s degree and 8-10 years Human Resources-related experience with increasing responsibilities, particularly in the area of employee relations. Must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a manager or higher role. SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), HRCI Senior Professional in HR (SPHR) or SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP), HRCI Professional in HR (PHR) preferred.
