Forestry Technician Jobs

Under the direction and general supervision of the Landscape Supervisor, the Forestry Technician performs a variety of skilled manual tasks including various types of native conservation duties, trail repair, volunteer support, tree planting, and general forestry vegetation maintenance, such as trimming, brushing, small tree removal to help support the Vegetation Management Plan. In addition, some general duties (gardening, earth removing, refuse disposal, stocking and storing materials), as instructed.

The individual is expected to perform assignments under various weather conditions. It would encompass various terrains including area containing Poison Oak, stairs, forest trails, hills, slopes, and rocky foot paths.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

61 contiguous acres of open space, free of any permanent structures or facilities except footpaths and appropriate landscape to enhance its use as a natural area.
UCSF is committed to maintaining the Reserve as an important natural resource for San Franciscans and takes seriously its responsibility to keep the site safe and accessible.
The Reserve is constituted of 98% Eucalyptus Blue Gum tree canopy with Native plants conservation site, and non-native invasive vines, and ground cover. It is accessible with more than 5 miles of public, multi-use trails with a total elevation of 900-feet.
The Reserve is home of Sutro Stewards Volunteer partners and their native plant nursery.

In 2018, UCSF started a comprehensive Vegetation Management Plan with 5 goals:

• Maintain and ensure public access to the Reserve as a designated open space
• Improve and enhance the health and stability of the ecosystem while increasing biodiversity
• Protect the safety of Reserve users: UCSF students, faculty, staff and patients, neighbors and adjoining campus and residential properties
• Enhance the visual design and aesthetic experience

• Ability to communicate with technical staff and skilled trades
• Ability to work without direct supervision and handle multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to deliver high quality customer service and to respond to the customer’s needs
• Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations
• High school graduation and one (1) year of experience as a laborer/gardener (landscape, horticulture or forestry); or equivalent combination of education and work experience
• Demonstrated experience safely operating and maintaining power tools
• Working knowledge of landscape, horticulture, or forestry.
• Demonstrated experience in safely operating power tools (i.e. chainsaw) and small to large/heavy equipment
• Demonstrated familiarity with field-related equipment
• Ability to perform work on schedule in a safe and timely manner
• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing in English with customers and department staff at all levels

• Demonstrated experience with small equipment maintenance
• Experience climbing without spurs
• Demonstrated knowledge of ornamental and California native plants
• University experience or comparable experience supporting a large, complex service oriented institution
• Demonstrated experience in trail maintenance
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint)
• Knowledge of knots and rigging technics
• Experience working with volunteer programs
