The Bureau of Urban Forestry
We oversee the median maintenance, tree planting, and maintenance of 124,000-plus City-owned trees through the voter-backed StreetTreeSF program. San Francisco Public Works is developing StreetTreeSF into an efficient and cost-effective system to routinely and proactively maintain street trees, ensuring that all public trees are inspected and pruned on a regular basis. In addition, crews repair sidewalks and build curb ramps to advance safety and accessibility.

Appointment Type: Temporary Provisional (TPV). This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service examination for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years.

Under general supervision, you will inspect trees, shrubs, turf, rights of way (roads, flood control channels, transportation corridors, lots, landscaping and easements, etc.), bodies of water, and structures for evidence of various pests and related damage, and take the appropriate steps to resolve problems.

The essential functions include:

  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Directs the work of a driver in the operation of a spray truck.
  • Utilizes traps, chemical and non-chemical methods to manage pests.
  • Operates and maintains specialized equipment such as sprayers of various types, small boats to spray lakes for algae and weed control, and/or large-capacity truck sprayers for surface areas.
  • Requisitions and evaluates needed supplies and keeps records of chemicals used and recommendations for spray control operations.
  • Monitors pest ecosystems to evaluate the presence of pest species, natural pest predators, and conditions that may contribute to pest problems.
  • Surveys and inspects trees, shrubs, grass, rights of way, and other vegetation, aquatics, and structures for evidence of disease or presence of harmful pests by using visual aids, field observations, and history records.
  • Assists and provides expertise in the development of an integrated pest management program strategy.
  • Maintains detailed IPM records.
  • Implements pest control measures in accordance with the City's Integrated Pest Management Program (Chapter 39 of the San Francisco Administrative Code).
  • Provides expertise, assistance, and training to staff, structural contract service providers, and the public about pest biology, the IPM approach, new pest management strategies, and toxicology of pesticides for use.
  • Mixes, applies, and monitors various recommended chemicals, fertilizers, compounds, and baits to be used for treatment, elimination, or control of specific conditions found.
  • Provides technical direction and oversight to gardening staff and other departmental employees.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:
One (1) year of verifiable experience working as a professional gardener, nursery worker or professional pest control provider.

License and Certification:
Possession of a California Commercial Applicator Certificate (QAC/QAL) which includes one or more of the following categories: Residential, Industrial, and Institutional; Landscape Maintenance; Rights-of-way; Forest; Aquatic; and Wood Preservation.

Possession of a valid California class C driver license.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hours work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Selection Procedures:

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
Candidates may be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

The selection process will include an evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to interview. Depending on the number of applicants, the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.
