Position Summary

The Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a National Cancer Institute (NCI) supported clinical trials group, is the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research. The COG unites more than 9,000 experts in childhood cancer at more than 200 leading children’s hospitals, universities, and cancer centers across North America, Australia, and New Zealand in the fight against childhood cancer. An overarching principle of COG is to ensure that the organization’s structure is optimized to maximize the potential for research that improves the outcome for every successive generation of children with cancer.

The Financial Analyst III is responsible for providing financial forecasting, budgeting, and reporting for the COG Coordinating Center, including managing funding from Federal, Industry, and Foundation grants and contracts. The Financial Analyst III will support the COG Finance Manager and Senior Director of Finance by maintaining tools, metrics, and reports to provide critical fiscal and operational information to COG Leadership. A primary responsibility of the position is to manage the day-to-day operations for COG finances, including procurement, invoice processing, expense coding, budget development, and reconcile as well as resolve discrepancies as needed. In addition, the Financial Analyst will also support research administration responsibilities, including preparing administrative and financial sections of COG grant applications and associated post award requests. This position reports to the COG Finance Manager.

Full salary range for this position: $80,043 to $118,302 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $80,043 (minimum) to $99,173 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide analysis of trends and forecasts and recommend actions for optimizing available funds for grants and other funding.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Remain informed about federal and NIH grants policies, nonprofit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
  • Analyze and initiate general journal entries and budget line-item transfers.
  • Oversee COG procurement and invoice processing, including verifying appropriate expense coding and authorization for expenditures. Research, compile and prepare appropriate procurement documentation for COG vendors. Work closely with COG office Administrators and provide back up as necessary to minimize impact to business operations.
  • Assist in ensuring that program employees are charging time and effort to appropriate activity codes on their timesheets.
  • Contributes to COG finance team by maintaining knowledge of COG funding mechanisms and management strategy. Cross train job functions with COG Industry Financial Analyst in the COG Finance Department.
  • Perform routine analysis to research problems, reconcile discrepancies, and compose correspondence. Alert the Senior Director of Finance and Finance Manager of any pertinent issues and propose and execute solutions.
  • Assist with special projects within COG requiring finance support.
  • Develop grant submission proposals, including all administrative and budget components, for applications submitted through the Public Health Institute to support COG. Provide support to meet all grants or project submission reporting deadlines, including progress reports.
  • Provide on-site program expertise in PHI policies and procedures impacting COG finance and communicate those to program staff as appropriate.
  • Provide routine financial analysis, forecasting and reporting to the Senior Director of Finance and Executive Director of Research Administration and Finance.
  • Provide fiscal management support to the Executive Director of Administration & Finance, Senior Director of Finance, & Finance Manager, including providing information for and helping to prepare financial reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Manager to maintain systems to monitor budgets, expenditures, and financial projections. Provide ongoing assessment of COG’s financial management process and drive initiatives to enhance financial management and reporting to meet organization needs. This includes, but is not limited to, developing automated reporting/forecasting tools.
  • Compile program-related expense documentation related to specific queries from grantee organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years of accounting, budget or financial experience, including:
  • Experience in financial planning, reporting, and analysis; using knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems
  • Experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting
  • Experience in Research Administration, including pre and post award administrative management of sponsored projects
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related field, or you can substitute with 4 additional years of related experience.

Other Qualifications

  • Demonstrate understanding of general ledger account analysis.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and prioritize projects with short deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel, and common desktop/web applications.
  • Experience with National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other federal funding.
  • Ability to be creative, resourceful, reliable, trustworthy, and discrete.
  • Ability to gather, organize, and perform financial analysis assignments with limited supervision.
  • Strong reasoning and analytical skills.
  • Familiar with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software. PeopleSoft preferred.
  • Excellent math skills.
  • Ability to be an effective team player with ability to relate well with others.
