Position Summary
The Employee & Labor Relations Specialist is responsible for assisting, guiding, supporting and participating in the administration of labor relations policies, programs and processes for union and non-union employees at the Museum. This position, which reports to the Director of Employee and Labor Relations, supports the day-to-day administration of all collective bargaining agreements and assists in acting as an information resource for such matters. Duties will also include participating in contract negotiations, investigations and processing of employee grievances and Museum progressive disciplinary actions.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Provides monthly reports to union representatives pursuant to collective bargaining agreements.
  • Collects data, develops summaries and reports status of Labor Relations matters. Interprets contracts and agreements and Labor Relations Orders dealing with wages, hours, working conditions.
  • Performs related duties, as required.
  • Analyzes Labor Relations employee data and data sources to support department metrics. Creates and presents reports and presentations as necessary.
  • Coordinates Labor Management Meetings, partnering with Union and management representatives in various departments. Maintains ongoing liaison with Union representatives and maintains minutes of all meetings.
  • Executes the pay administration processes for union employees on a monthly basis.
  • Participates in the processes for contract negotiations with unions on noneconomic demands and on matters of an economic nature. Supporting negotiations by liaising with Benefits, HRIS, Payroll.
  • Researches and assists in responding to inquiries from managers about Contracts, Memorandums of Understanding and any interpretations of labor agreements.
  • Prepares progress reports, develops summaries and reports status of negotiations. Assists in preparation of the Museum’s position before any fact-finding panels or committees.
  • Assists in preparation of Labor Relations training and workshops for various Museum department heads/supervisors.
  • Inputs data and tracks union and nonunion employee actions.
  • Partners with HRIS Manager to build, support and maintain systems for managing pay for union employees.
  • Investigates and processes employees’ grievances.


The expected salary range for the Employee & Labor Relations Specialist is $65,000 – 75,000. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.
Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.

Required Qualifications
  • 1+ year(s) of experience in labor and/or employee relations, including participating in negotiations and administration of agreements of labor relations matters.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field of Labor Relations, Personnel Administration, Public Administration, Management, Economics, Law or related field.
  • Excellent verbal, written, analytical and presentation skills, required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, required.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, knowledge and skills sufficient to indicate ability to perform satisfactorily.
