Job Description

The Company:

SparkCharge is a fast-growing cleantech start-up that is reducing barriers to Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption. We design, manufacture, and sell portable charging systems for EVs. We also provide “Charging-as-a-Service” (CaaS) to EV Fleets and to consumers. SparkCharge is headquartered in Somerville, MA, manufacturers products in Buffalo, NY, and has mobile charging operations in multiple cities.


The Position:

SparkCharge needs an experienced People Operations professional with broad experience in all human resource functions, include talent retention, recruitment, compensation, and culture. The role requires a strong work ethic to support parallel efforts to add new team members, support company-wide team building efforts, and refine our current people management processes. SparkCharge grew from 10 employees in 2020 to 75 today. We expect to double in size by 2024. The People Operations Director will work closely with the C-Suite to guide company expansion.


● Responsibilities:

● Outcomes of all employee-related systems, processes, and policies.

● Coordinate a systematic talent management strategy for the company, including compensation management. Successfully manage rapid headcount expansion.

● Advise and coach SparkCharge managers regarding best HR practices.

● Develop and improve policies and procedures related to people management.

● Work with the CEO and COO to further develop the company’s team-oriented culture.

● Optimize SparkCharge pay and benefits programs, including payroll processing.

● Benchmark SparkCharge compensation and retention results, and advise management about improvement opportunities.

● Ensure compliance with all requirements related to personnel management.

● Coordinate, if necessary, any performance improvement or discipline procedures.


Minimum Requirements:

● Must have more than 10 year’s direct employee relations experience, including conventional human resource duties, at a product or service business.

● Must be “a people person”—outgoing, self-confident, professional. Must become a trusted ally of all employees, and judiciously bridge any leadership gaps that may exist.

● Must have a career record of success in positions of increasing responsibility.

● Must have demonstrable success growing an organization’s headcount and talent base.

● Must fit well with our hands-on, “many-hats” start-up culture. Excited to get into the trenches to create, implement, and grow HR systems. This is a hands-on job.

● Must have experience creating and managing employee development and HR compliance programs.

● Must have a BA or BS from an accredited four-year college or university.

● Must be able and willing to work full time at our Somerville, MA office.


Additional Desired Attributes:

● Experience with a tech-based start-up.

● Experience in the automotive industry is a plus, particularly if with EVs.

● Experience with immigration processes and work visas.

● Active SHRM membership.
