United Way Bay Area (UWBA) mobilizes the Bay Area to dismantle the root causes of poverty and build equitable pathways to prosperity UWBA brings together partners from the nonprofit, business, and government sectors to address Bay Area poverty. We partner across sectors, develop solutions, capture the data we need, and use those insights to support public policy and create research-backed community initiatives. These initiatives include:
- Basic Needs: Ensure access to basic needs like food, housing, and legal services.
- Employment & Career Opportunities: Build systems and pathways to career and employment opportunities.
- Financial Stability: Help families increase income and savings on their way to financial stability.
- Housing Justice: Improve access to stable, affordable housing and homelessness prevention.

The Opportunity:
United Way Bay Area (UWBA) seeks a dynamic and ambitious fundraising professional to co-design and lead effective multi-year fundraising strategies to expand UWBA’s revenue stream and portfolio of funding partners. The Director, Institutional Partnerships plays a pivotal role in building relationships, identifying, and securing new institutional funding opportunities, and participating in funding networks that result in multi-year grants to help tackle the root causes of poverty in the San Francisco Bay Area. This critical role will help manage the Institutional Partnerships portfolio by ensuring a sustainable and intentional pathway to renewed funding, securing new or lapsed funding, and by encouraging impact-driven results-oriented reporting.
Additionally, this individual will lead the identification of new grant opportunities from private foundations, corporations, and government agencies. This role will be supervised by the Senior Director, Institutional Partnerships, and they will collaborate with them, the Vice President, Development, and the Grants Manager, to develop and implement an ambitious plan to support UWBA’s mission of mobilizing the San Francisco Bay Area to dismantle the root causes of poverty and build equitable pathways to prosperity through direct services, educational programming, and community investments.
The Director will need to have exceptional written communication as they will work with key stakeholders both internally and externally in a fast-paced environment that demands keen attention to detail. This person will work closely with the Senior Director, Institutional Partnerships and Grants Manager, to develop and refine strategies for maximizing results. Additionally, they are expected to collaborate with other team members across the organization including Marketing, Community Impact, and Finance.
This is a professional exempt position reporting to the Senior Director of Institutional Partnerships. It is a full time, regular, 37.5 hour per week position.
What you’ll do:
- Monitor progress toward fiscal year goals and report weekly to the Senior Director on progress, opportunities, and challenges.
- Provide leadership to grant staff and consultants. Establish and implement systems to ensure effective grant-writing processes, including application and reporting tracking, producing creative collateral, and compiling reports.
- Continue the cultivation of existing foundation, government and corporate portfolio and expand with lapsed partners.
- Prospect and oversee the identification of new private, corporate, and public sector opportunities in support of UWBA’s priority programs.
- Coordinate across teams to prepare comprehensive budgets for proposals and timely, accurate financial reporting.
- Lead stewardship of institutional funders by maintaining a positive and proactive relationship with all assigned funders.
- Attend and engage in philanthropic networking events that help inform the organizations strategy and strategic plan.
- Develop partnership strategies and establish accountable, measurable goals and objectives.
- Increase the number of proposals to new and existing institutional funders.
Who you are:
- Self-motivated, results-oriented, and deadline driven.
- Four-year college degree or equivalent work experience.
- Concise, compelling, and clear writing and communication style (a writing sample will be required).
- Strong project management skills, particularly the ability to manage competing deadlines and work professionally under time constraints.
- Strong computer skills including above average competency in Word and Excel; project management and research databases and Salesforce experience a plus.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with colleagues and external partners.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and ambitious.
- 5 years of fundraising experience preferred.

SALARY: $ 90,000.00 - $ 115,000.00
