Job introduction:
The GDS organization would like to hire a candidate for the Director, Engineering – Compute Platforms position. This associate will manage a product or portfolio of products of significant value (providing fundamental change to our technology or business direction). Scope of work is broader and consistently more critical or complex than those delivered by lower-level managers. Responsible for hiring, managing, and deploying resources across team(s) to enable optimal alignment of staff to business priorities. Coaches and evaluates performance and quality of work delivered by team members. Sets department direction, creates motivating work environment for team(s) and motivates staff to achieve direction. Understands tools, architecture, security, and scalability needs for assigned team(s). Maintains breadth and depth of perspective, utilizing enterprise and industry/market trends. Manages total cost of ownership, advocates for the removal of technical debt, assists and supports team effectiveness. Champions and effectively utilizes agile methodology and practices.

- Anticipates and manages technology evolution and relates it to business solutions.
- In conjunction with Product Owners and Engineering Managers, develops the business and/or technology vision, strategies, critical success factors and operating plans for application, unit, or platform.
- Supports managers in addressing or escalating issues to make the overall team more efficient.
- Aligns teamwork toward the product vision and shared goals and links vision to coaching and feedback to managers and team members.
- Coaches and counsels team members, especially managers regarding leadership techniques in an agile environment.
- Established financial plan for the department and manages to plan and ensure that key goals are met by managers in their department.
- Determines and manages resource strategy and plan (FTE, skills needed, depth of experience, internal and external staffing mix) consistent with the budget and needs of the department.
- Facilitates or provides mentoring experiences.
- Monitors application health and follows trends across multiple dimensions, determining remediating actions in partnership with teams where necessary.
- Leads or is involved in efforts to evaluate, select, and implement new technologies to enhance application or platform. Understands the business domain and product vision.
- Coordinates with vendors to ensure talent management, on-boarding and transition are performed in a consistent manner.
- Removes roadblocks and obstacles; manages interdependencies when needed.
- Initiates and fosters collaborative partnerships with current and potential clients, technology and business managers, vendors, and technology executives; develops relationships that promote trust and increase efficiency and effectiveness.
- Coordinates and delivers performance reviews and drives professional development, including rotations and special assignments.
- Ensures there is a target architectural direction and pulls together proper resources to define if no clear direction exists.
- Jointly establishes financial targets with business partners, when applicable.
- Balances individual client needs with business priorities assuring alignment with the business and product vision, strategies, and objectives.
- Hires and manages lower-level managers and may hire and manage individual contributors.
- Deals effectively with performance issues in a timely manner.
Desired skills:
- Highly developed negotiation, facilitation and consensus building skills demonstrated through effective interactions with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Minimum 10 + years’ experience in a practice relevant domain including delivering software solutions in an agile environment.
- Experience leading large scale platforms within the compute portfolio including Kubernetes / Containers, O/S, and Hybrid Private/Public Cloud.
- Minimum 5+ years in a leadership role preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of IT concepts, strategies and methodologies and their application to business opportunities. In-depth knowledge of business operations, objectives, and strategies.
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills; strong presentation skills.
- Ability to promote a team environment consisting of several teams.
- Bachelor`s or Master`s Degree in technical or business discipline.
