- Serves as liaison to religious resources.
- Provides leadership in Jumu’ah prayer services and Islamic study groups.
- Ensures that the needs of Muslim inmates are recognized and that appropriate services are provided.
- Sets dates and coordinates arrangements with all institutions and food services branch for annual Ramadan fast, eid-ul-fitr and eid-ul-adha feasts.
- Recruits, orients, and coordinates institutional supervision of all Islamic volunteers.
- Provides training and technical assistance about the Islamic faith.
- Manages funds for purchases of Muslim supplies.
- Serves as Senior Muslim Chaplain. Responsible for planning and organizing all religious services and activities for Muslim inmates statewide.
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
The equivalent of a master of divinity degree from an accredited theological school, additional clinical pastoral education and/or work experience in a clinical pastoral setting.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
(Or an acceptable equivalency as approved by the Division of State Human Resources).
- The equivalent of a Master of Divinity degree from an accredited theological school and one (1) year of formal ministry experience in the Islamic faith; or a bachelor's degree in religious services with the completion of at least three (3) years of Islamic religious studies, including Islamic history, the holy Quran, principles of faith and articles of faith in any masjid or college ND three (3) years of formal ministry experience in the Islamic faith.
- Must successfully complete the required number of clinical pastoral education (CPE) requirements within the first 18 months of placement into the position. Note: candidate must present an acceptable formal written statement of endorsement or approval from the candidate's religious body for ministry in a correctional setting.
