Title:
Biomedical Engineer (Biomedical Research and Virtual Reality Development at NASA JSC)This position will support the Human Physiology, Performance, Protection, and Operations (H-3PO) Laboratory, which conducts research and provides operational expertise in several technical disciplines to address health and performance risks for astronauts. Disciplines include Extravehicular Activity (EVA) physiology, exercise physiology and countermeasures, and applied injury biomechanics. The focus of this position will include tasks to develop advanced concepts in an array of digital and physical mediums, including virtual and hybrid reality, to test and refine designs. Responsibilities may include implementing and evaluating human performance across multiple environments using actual or simulated spacesuits; developing EVA simulation content, procedures, and training tools for use in physical, virtual, and/or hybrid-reality environments; and developing operational concepts for future missions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Develop data analysis tools using MATLAB, Python, R, or similar programming language
- Develop, test, and implement virtual or hybrid reality content in Unity or Unreal Engine using blueprints, C++, or similar programming means
- Operate existing predictive models and develop new integrated models using data from multiple studies to predict human performance during EVA
- Serve as a test subject for protocol and hardware evaluations on a volunteer basis
- Design and maintain data acquisition software and/or systems
- Assist with study documentation, including Institutional Review Board protocols, test plans, test readiness review packages, standard operating procedures, progress reports, etc.
- Monitor human subjects and collect physiological data during research studies and/or operational training, including at analog facilities and field locations
- Responsible for completing all assigned training
- Present technical results at internal meetings and scientific conferences
- Assist with coordination of human research studies and engineering evaluations, including scheduling and integration with study team, stakeholders and collaborators
- Provide inputs to weekly and monthly status reports
- Perform equipment set-up, calibration, operation, and monitoring for tests/evaluations
- Work with the NASA H-3PO Lab Lead and Technical Area Integrators to implement research activities outlined in Strategic Roadmaps
- Demonstrate a strong work ethic and commitment to the customer and team

- Prepare technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations
- Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel
- Assist with analysis and interpretation of research and operational data; consult with NASA statisticians as needed
- Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies and procedures
- Archive data per NASA policy
Education/Experience:
REQUIRED:
- 2+ years of experience with designing or coding virtual or hybrid reality assets in Unreal Engine or similar
- Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering or related engineering field and approximately 5 years of experience or combination of graduate-level education and experience is required
- Must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident
- Experience evaluating hardware, such as wearable sensors or other health-related equipment
- Knowledge of NASA's policies for human health and performance research, including Institutional Review Board approvals, Test Readiness Reviews, etc
- Knowledge of NASA mission operations and hardware relevant to human health countermeasures and to EVA
- A masters degree in biomedical engineering or related field is highly desired.
- Experience with implementation of operational studies to evaluate human performance and human-system interactions, especially related to spaceflight
- Experience conducting human health and performance research, including physiological monitoring and/or kinematic analysis
Skills/Training
REQUIRED:
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, both formal and informal, including oral presentations
- Experience with bioinstrumentation and data acquisition systems
- Highly motivated with developed organizational skills; must be able to work independently with minimal oversight and support multiple projects
- Experience with Unreal Engine and developing virtual reality content via blueprints and/or C++
- Experience with MATLAB, R, Python programming, or equivalent
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member; employee will be required to work and communicate with human test subjects, astronauts, personnel across multiple JSC directorates and external collaborators
- Standard PC and Microsoft Office skills for preparation of documents and presentations
- Demonstrated skill in preparation of technical reports
- Demonstrated real-time problem solving skills
- Experience with spaceflight related analogs and/or simulations
- Ability to critically analyze data and perform statistical analysis
- Experience with CAD and modeling tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, Blender, or equivalent
- Experience with motion capture systems and analysis of kinematic data
