Job Description

Reporting directly to the Vice President for Human Resources (HR), the Associate Director for Human Resources will provide HR services in an active, fast-paced, and complex environment for departments within UHR: Benefits, Compensation and Global HR; Client Services; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging; Employee and Labor Relations; Employee Support Programs and Services; HR Communications; HR Community; and Talent Management and Workforce Strategy.

The position will work independently with general supervision, interacting with a diverse group of individuals to support the strategic, innovative, and flexible policies, practices, programs, and services that sustain a workplace culture of excellence and high engagement. The Associate Director must be able to engage in a culture of trust, encourage diversity of thought, and value the people we support. The ideal candidate will have exceptional communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, as well as experience influencing leaders and individual contributors. The ideal candidate must possess and demonstrate a positive outlook on continuous process improvement efforts while maintaining a customer-focused mindset. It is critical that this position exhibit the ability to practice sound judgment, decision-making, and respectful relationship management. This position must also exhibit a strong desire to continuously learn new and unfamiliar business topics, policies, and procedures related to HR functions; the ability to translate this information into operational successes will be critical.

This position will be based on the Stanford Redwood City campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site).

In this position you will:

  • Oversee UHR’s Grow and Perform at Stanford performance review process. Provide relevant coaching and guidance.
  • Investigate basic and complex employee relations issues and recommend and facilitate effective solutions in alignment with applicable policies and laws. Work in consultation with Employee and Labor Relations to resolve highly complex issues, as needed. Coach and advise on organizational and employee issues.
  • Working in partnership with UHR program owners, develop implementation plans for executing university-wide and/or UHR-specific HR programs within UHR. Plans should include stakeholder management and education, communication needs, training and support tools, and rollout schedules.
  • Manage UHR’s salary planning program. Advise managers on assigning employees to appropriate classification levels; review and approve salary actions; design and/or manage incentive and bonus programs, as needed.
  • Assess organizational and individual development needs. Identify, communicate, and consult with staff on training and career development opportunities. Develop and conduct relevant training and participate in training design.
  • Collaborate with the University HR leadership team (Vice President and Associate Vice Presidents) to support initiatives by understanding the organization's objectives, issues, needs, and key success factors. Participate in planning processes and promote best practices; provide leadership for workforce planning efforts.
  • Design strategies for facilitating organizational and behavioral change. Perform needs assessment, analysis, and consulting on organizational issues; make recommendations on organizational design and development issues.
  • Oversee human resources transactions, prepare reports, and analyze data available through local and centralized database resources.
  • Oversee processes for workers' compensation, disability, leave, workplace accommodation requests, and health and safety issues for UHR; inform managers and human resources directors, as needed. Act as a resource to others in the organization and oversee accurate documentation and recordkeeping.
  • Oversee organizational-wide view of talent management (recruitment and staffing plans), and structure offers for UHR. Support or lead higher-level searches.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Excellent facilitation and oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare clear and concise reports and deliver formal presentations or training to senior management and other audiences.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and understanding of group dynamics. Successful track record of establishing credibility and trust with a diverse client group.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience as a consultant and advisor to management in at least four human resources areas, including: employee relations, employment and labor law, compensation, staffing and employment, DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion), training and development, performance and management coaching, and organizational development.
  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Strong supervision/management and staff development experience.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving, judgment, negotiating, influencing, and decision-making skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy.

The expected pay range for this position is $140,000 to $165,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
