The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

The Assistant Dean of Development will join Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health (CUMSPH) at an extraordinary moment for public health and for the School as it begins its second century. As one of the top schools of public health with some of the world’s top researchers in areas including infectious disease, climate change and advancing health equity, CUMSPH is celebrating its Centennial by commemorating a century of leadership and innovation in public health and shaping a comprehensive campaign to enable progress towards its vision of a healthy and just world for all. The Assistant Dean for Development in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations at CUMSPH is key to this effort, providing leadership, guidance, and supervision to the development team.
Together with the Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations, Assistant Dean for External Relations, Assistant Dean of Alumni and Constituent Relations and campaign counsel, the Assistant Dean of Development will contribute to the development and execution of overall fundraising strategy, including the formation and execution of strategic direction and goals including fundraising policies, programs, and activities to secure the resources needed to advance the School’s work and deepen its impact during its second century.
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations for CUMSPH, the Assistant Dean of Development will manage a team of gift officers and oversee all aspects of the individual giving program, including building a sustainable donor pipeline, developing donor and prospect strategies, and working with gift officers to create and manage portfolios with the highest potential donors. The Assistant Dean of Development will collaborate with campus colleagues across academic and administrative departments to understand funding priorities and engage them as needed to build strong donor relationships, and support the implementation of individual giving and campaign initiatives. This position will be hybrid.

Responsibilities


  • Build strong relationship with the department chairs to secure philanthropic gifts to their departments. Work closely to align our efforts with their top priorities and help guide them in all philanthropic endeavors.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as needed.
  • Manage tracking, communications, and follow-up with prospects, including maintaining detailed contact reports and phase changes on all prospects in the portfolio. Oversee all aspects of donor relations to ensure that gifts are cultivated, solicited, and stewarded in accordance with CUMSPH policies and development best practices.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the frontline development team to identify, cultivate, and solicit donors to consistently increase support for CUMSPH.
  • Maintain a current body of knowledge about CUMSPH’s programs, as well as the Dean’s aspirations and development priorities. Conduct a minimum of 96 prospect meetings annually and independently manage a portfolio of 75 prospects through all phases of the giving cycle, from validation and engagement through cultivation, solicitation, gift negotiation, and stewardship.
  • Supervise and manage the Leadership Gifts Officer and anticipated additional gift officers, including the development and maintenance of their portfolios and effective implementation of moves management.
  • Build a strong network of collegial partnerships with development and departmental representatives both within MSPH and across Columbia University, such as directors, faculty, officers, and other Development staff, to consult on needs, formulate proposal strategies, and identify potential donors.
  • Create and manage new research and education advisory committees that will build the pipeline for new gifts to the School and showcase our work to donors, board members and the community.
  • Meet agreed-upon individual and frontline team fundraising goals and metrics by successfully closing gifts and meeting agreed-upon moves management strategies for highest value portfolio prospects identified annually.
  • Manage the planned giving program for CUMSPH by identifying, cultivating and soliciting planned gift donors and prospects, overseeing planned giving policies and procedures, and partnering with the Associate Director of Stewardship and Communications on the stewardship of planned giving donors.
  • Work closely with the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations to create and implement a development plan, and secure major gifts in support of annual giving, the gala, and the campaign.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Experience or interest in issues embodied by the School of Public Health’s mission.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience and a minimum of 5 related experience
  • Ability to be a persuasive advocate for CUMSPH’s priorities and present information in a clear and compelling manner, both in writing and in person.
  • Ability to use current desktop office technologies proficiently and to adapt to and use future technologies. Ability to work with a variety of constituencies, including donors, faculty, volunteers and staff. Sound judgment, tact and ability to handle highly confidential information. Strong initiative and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to handle multiple tasks under deadline pressures in a high-volume office.
  • Enthusiastic, creative and enterprising. Other Requirements Ability and willingness to travel within the greater New York City metropolitan area and regionally. Occasional evening or weekend work hours required.
  • Excellent management, planning, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6 - 8 years of fundraising or related transferable experience strongly preferred, preferably with proven success heading a major fundraising function in higher education.
